Fatal Accidental Discharge

When the idiot went to grab for the next "empty weapon" at least the kids had the sense to say "put it down". Apparently, the adults in the room were going to allow the shooting session to continue.

no kidding ... he obviously overstated his qualifications a bit.
but out of morbid curiosity ... I just have to wonder how bad he'd have screwed himself up with that unloaded rifle

Shouldn't we be refering to these incidents as "Negligent Discharges"?

Doesn't seem to be anything accidental about it.

I was just going to post the same thing. The term AD should be stricken from our vocabulary.

It's Negligent. Other words apply but not in "good taste"

I disagree ... ND we are well aware account for most bad stories AD also does exist and is attributed to a mechanical fault whereby the arm does not work as advertised.
such as cases where 1911's went full auto due to breakage putting the last round through the shooters face ... thats an AD.
even had he done everything by the book .. it ends badly

OK, if it is a mechanical failure with no operator error then yes it would be "accidental"

We just had a case of a stupid high school boy, aiming a 22 rifle at his girlfriends head, pulled trigger. Killed her instantly.

"Duh, I didn't know it was loaded"= Stupid, Negligent.

I dont see what differance what we label it. Crap happens and will keep happining. I personaly havent had a gun accident but have been standing alongside several when they happened and in both cases it happened to guys who were experianced gunmen, ex leo and retired military. I am real carefull not to damn others on accidents as I belive in karma or whatever. I have had far more than my share of mishaps involveing motorcycles, vehicles and even two crash landings. All I had good "excuses" for, but they happened. After every one of them storys came back about how stupid I was by some "expert" that wasnt there and heard secound handed about it. The old expert flier art barns (Poncho barns son) was my flight examiner who gave me my license. Later he got killed flying a corsair he restored.
I told this one before. Years ago I and my best friend bill were out hitting gun shops and I bought a set of herret grips for my s&w model 60 I had been looking for. His house was nearby so we went there for a break as I put on the grips. I laid the gun on the coffee table before takeing the grips off. I unloaded it of course. Bill picked up the gun and dry fired it at one of those rugs that had a picture of a moose on it nailed on the wall. I put the grips and reloaded the gun and set it back down on the table between bill and I as we were BS`ing. Bill and I worked together, shot together all the time and ran around together off work. Bill was a gun nut, ex military and cop! He looked at the gun, reached over and picked it up no doubt seeing how the grips felt. All of the sudden he aimed again at the rug on the wall. Just as I yelled HEY!, he fired the gun! Then he cussed ME out royaly! He claimed I had tricked him somehow as he didnt see me load the gun! He had been sitting across the coffee table looking me in the eye as I reloaded and somehow it never registered in his mind! Yes, he drilled the moose!

That is my point, Merril. There was nothing accidental about that incident. He willfully violated several tenets of gun safety. Your friend was surely a great guy, but in that case he was negligent, plain and simple.

St. Joseph Missouri police dept recently had a fatal AD, if that's what it can be called.

During a training session for rubber bullets, some of the trainees took a lunch break and, rightfully, reloaded their guns with duty ammo as they were going offsite for lunch.

When they came back, the student asked another to shoot him in the back with the rubber bullet so he would know what to expect in the upcoming training, but the shooter forgot he had switched back to regular ammo.

I'm not involved in this, just repeating what I read in the newspaper.

Accidental discharges are rare but they happen. If you're around guns long enough, it is very likely you will have or see one.

That can hardly be called an AD.

Why was the shooter pointing the 1911 at his own face?

I don't think it started out that way but that is how it ended. Most full automatics will "climb" and w/ a .45 there is nothing much to hang onto other than the grips.

Something heavier like the M 60 will still climb but not as quickly or suddenly and, therefore, are a little easier to control.

exactly ... in these cases the shooter expects semi auto function ... but then in yeehaw mode due to fault , it will rotate in the hand until empty, often times with the gun in the shooters face
