favorite hunting weapon?

Deer/elk/moose/antelope: Remington 700 ADL in .270 I bought in 1977 or a Ruger MK II in 7mm Mag, just depends which one I'm in the mood for. Usually carry a handgun, usually again, which ever one I'm in the mood for, might be my 651, 2.5" 66, 631, Glock 26, just never know...

shooting

I wasn't there but if I understand the post, that sounds like unacceptable gun handling to me. Certainly not something to be put forth as a humorous prank.

my dad was one way and the guy shot straight away from him... in the complete opposite direction. no one was at risk of being shot. he shot right into a lake. perfectly safe..

Squirrels & Bunnies - 10" Contender 22 Match or 14" Contender Carbine 22 Match.
Deer - 14" Contender Carbine 7-30 Waters or 4" 686
Birds - Winchester M10 12 gauge.
Goblins in the night - Colt 1911 45ACP or 686

I LOVE deer hunting with the Contender - The other guys where we park think it's a toy :)
You can't see much over 30 yards where I hunt and both the 7-30 & .357 Mags do the job = DRT. The 7-30 Waters is even a bit of an over kill at short distances....

For deer in the lower part of the state where I had the potential of a long shot my rifle was a 700 Remington BDL 25.06 with a 3-9 Redfield wide field. (Purchased that outfit in mid 70s) Barrel was floated, action glassed and a trigger adjustment done. With well worked up hand loads that rifle was super accurate &responsible for a lot of venison.

Up north in the Adirondacks most times I used either my model 29 in 8 3/8 or 4''. Took a total of 6 deer with those 2 Smiths.

Do to circumstances I do not hunt anymore but still have all 3 guns and shoot them a bit on my own range behind house!

For deer,I ambush 'em,, jump on 'em an slit their throat, then sorta steer em' toward the truck.
fer black bear I set a snare, just before i cut it loose I kick it between the hind legs, while its rollin on the ground I gut it.

Deer- Stevens 200 action custom barrel .260
Elk- Rem 700 30-06
LR Varmits- Savage 10 action custom barrel .243
SR Varmits- M&P-15 Sport
Dove/Duck- Benelli Montefeltro 20g
Turkey-Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag 12g
Quail-Winchester Model 42 410 bore
Trap-Nikko 28g

is your 42 an original or one of the remakes from the 1990's? i have a couple originals and one browning remake

My Kimber .22 Hunter, it's light, accurate, with a great trigger, and even though it's the plain jane model I think it's kind of purdy.

It's a toss up . Right now it's the stickbow, a few years ago the Browning BSS bored skeet / skeet was it.

Mine was built on a 03-A3 action. It had an sport barrel, Timney adjustable trigger, reversed bolt handle, polished bolt, S&K Insta Mounts with a Simmons 44Mag 3-10X44 scope and a black RamLine stock. Using a source I had for once fired military National Match brass, IMR 4350 and Speer 165gr soft point boat tails, that thing was a tack driver at 200 yards. My brother wanted to buy that rifle for years and he finally talked me out of it. I kick myself every day for letting it go.

For a brush gun or what Elmer Keith called a 'timber rifle', I sure like my Remington 760 carbine in 30-06. During my tour in Alaska it accounted for two moose and four caribou, just the thing for carrying in the woods.

I don't have a good rifle for the desert where I live: I put a burr in the chamber of my 7mm Mag, trying to get the front half of a cartridge case out, and I have yet to get it rebarreled. It's sort of a lot for these regions, a 270 is about perfect, but I've never owned one.

For things that need a centerfire rifle, I stand by my Remington 700. 30-06
For the things in life that need shot to be thrown at them, I stick with my 32 year old Mossberg 500!

The only times I have ever needed a pistol, I was being A: Charged by a mad wild boar, and by a mad wild human. In neither case did I have time to use my rifle. For this, my S&W 9504.

If the burr is in the chamber, why not try to just polish it out? I have seen some really miracle jobs done on chambers...... had my gun safe next to the watyer heater in my old house. Heater failed, and spewed 50-100 gallons of smoking hot water under my safe while I was gone at work.:( About 20 rifles and shotguns had to be seriously worked over to get them back in the game. But we polished a LOT of snaggletoothed rusty chambers, and they were none the worse for wear.

Hunting only hogs and coyotes now. Use a Marlin XL7C in .30'06. It's a 2009 mfg so it's not a "Remlin"! Handloads are the only thing I shoot and hogs are in serious trouble out to 300 or so at work. Beyond that, I can't see!! Hogs and coyotes at the homefront (my 8 acres in the woods) get whacked with a 4" 629 and Keith SWC's with a healthy dose of 2400. They usually avoid my place now...maybe it's the smell I give off!!! A mix of Hoppe's #9 and pizza!

Have fun and be safe,

Wade

Browning Gold Deer Hunter here in the shotgun zone for deer or my Ruger Super Blackhawks or 8 3/8 S&W 657.
Same handguns and Rem 700 BDL in 30.06 or 25.06 where rifles are allowed.
I use Browning Gold Hunters in 12 and 20 gauge on birds or a Beretta Whitewing in 12 gauge.
Since my back went bad I gave up my compound bows and use a Ten Point Titan HLX crossbow with a red dot during bow season.

I like how you guys have your favorite. I just have a rifle. I wanted something cheap and powerful. Im in Pa so no semi autos and im a lefty. A few years back i was looking for a rifle at my LGSs. First store had a Ruger M77 in 3006 with scope for unded $500. Bought it and thats it. Would t call it my favorite its hust what i have.

For deer its a 700 BDL in .270 Win. topped with a Unertl Hawkeye 4X glass. Elder son killed his first deer with that rifle. It has a trigger like "breaking glass" and is by far the single most accurate rifle I have EVER owned. Bought it in 1970 and it has never failed me when I did my part. That one will be passed to elder son this Christmas and since my deer & pig hunting is about done due to arthritus, a Ruger #1 in 270 will do it for me the rest of my days....

Handgun will be a 30 year old Mdl. 34....plenty for the snakes and such...

Y'all use weapons for hunting? You Snipers, Special Ops or something like that? In my area we use firearms, which are tools not weapons. Well, now that I think about it I used to use a 6.5 Arisaka and a sporterized 1863 Springfield for hunting. They were considered weapons at one time but to me they were just tools.

Elk, Deer -- Rem-700 30.06, Matthews Bow, Knight .50 cal MK-85 Muzzel-Loader
Coyotes, Groundhogs (Deer occasionally) -- Rem-700 .243
Turkeys -- Winchester 1300 12ga.
Dove, Quail -- Beretta A390 in 12ga & 20ga
Squirrels -- Anschutz 1416 .22LR, S&W K22 Revolver

Well, I've regressed to where I started 55 years ago - a Model 94 in 30-30 (same rifle) and always either a Colt or Cimarron SAA in 45 Colt.

From Wikipedia:

"A weapon, arm, or armament is a tool or instrument used in order to inflict damage or harm to living beings - physical or mental -, artificial structures, or systems. In human society, weapons are used to increase the efficacy and efficiency of activities such as hunting, crime, law enforcement, and warfare."

For deer hunting with a gun im using a S&W 629 DX, If im bow hunting either a mathews Z7 or my Hyperlite.

deer, bear, moose, & elk: Ruger SS Blackhawk bisley in .410GNR now.

Varmints: .223, .204 T/C and .256 Falcon in Encore

Upland birds: Browning Citori Lightning in 12 or 20g

Turkey: Remington 870 with 3.5 inch chamber

Bunnies, squirrels, etc: Browning T-bolt in .22LR

I have to admit, I sure do like hunting with that Remington Model 7 / Leupold Compact 2-7x in 7mm-08 I inherited from my dad!

I bought a Citori Lightning 12ga from Dad a number of years ago (he picked it up at auction dirt cheap), but I seem to hit better with Grandpa's old M1897 12ga. Maybe it's because I've carried it for 44 years!
