Favorite Non-Smith 9mm Handgun

I have a Series 70 Government Model in 9mm that I found back in the 90s at the Monroeville, PA gun show. It has low mounted adjustable sights, a National Match bushing and locks up like a bank vault. I figured it would be a great gun for PPC matches. Soon after my club had a PPC match and I took this gun. I was amazed when I was able to put 2 shots in the "A" zone which was about the size of a pop can.

CZ75 SP-01

My favorite 9mm is the CZ75 SP-01. I like it because it has an ambidextrous safety, which is required for left handed-eyed shooters like me. The best upgrade ever for this pistol is TRU-GLO front and rear sights! :)

Also, this pistol is ridiculously easy to hit your target with.

Browning Hi Power, Ruger EC9s, Luger, Glock 19.

I carried a Beretta M9 in Kosovo and in Afghanistan. Never liked it; always thought it was too big. The funny thing is that I shot a clean qualification every time I shot one.

How many cases of 9mm thru it? Most Spanish handguns were meant for the nightstand and not a PPC or Combat Match. Never heard of any attendees at Thunder Ranch or Gunsite using one either.

This Spanish pistol was a military firearm and can handle plenty of cases of ammo. it is all steel and built like a tank. Apparently you are ignorant of its origins and capabilities. Don't care if no one used one at Thunder Ranch…..do some research instead of being an obtuse fool.

It's a losing proposition to argue with the folks who know things because someone in authority said so. And that's at the core of the influencer and course instructor based opinions.

What you are suggesting is actual experience with a firearm and evaluating it on its actual merits, rather than relying on "Authority" figures (who all have their own implicit biases and agendas).

The Spanish firearms also suffer from reputations for and claims of poor quality that are usually at odds with the actual quality of the Spanish gun making industry.

Easy choice. Sig P210 Carry.

I agree completely. I bought the P210 target and was so impressed with the feel and the way it shot, I went back and bought the 210C for carry. Need a better holster now, but without a doubt, is smoother than any 9mm I have had to use on or off duty, and the target is the most accurate I have ever shot.

I lived about three or so miles from the Expo Mart in the early 1990's. Great gun shows at that time. The entire floor of the Expo Mart was used back then. Have heard it was down to a half of the floor later.

My new other favorite 9mm. When I can buy 9mm for less than half the cost of .38 Special this spaghetti gun makes a lot of sense. It came with 300 rounds of .38 and .357 - the 9mm cylinder looked unused. Not anymore….

P5

The Walther P5 is one of my favorites, not because it's the best shooter (it's not), and not because it's beautiful (it's not), but because of its design and engineering. Some features have carried over from other models, but the whole package makes for a very interesting pistol. The left side ejection port and pivoting firing pin safety are just two of the its unique features. I get interesting reactions from shooters at the range when they see ejected brass coming at them from their right side.

About a dozen years ago, I asked Bill Laughrige at Cylinder & Slide to build me a custom 5 inch 9 mm 1911 for IDPA. Back just before I deployed to Saudi Arabia for Desert Storm, not being sure I would be issued a sidearm, I contacted Bill for a fast build of a Browning HP, and he sourced and tuned a MkIII, but as it were I was issued a 1911. Which by the way was impossible to keep from rusting overnite in the rain. Bill and his team at C&S have since worked on about 7 or 8 handguns for me.

Bill asked what I wanted on my only full custom pistol, and I just said do what he felt best. So he did a Fusion SS gun, cerakoted, with Barstow, a gold front sight, and the rest of his suggestions. As for markings, just a small and discreet serial number, and nothing else. It is a superb handgun, with a silky smooth action.
