Was at Bass Pro yesterday looking for .44 Magnum ammo.
They had a several choices, two of them being Federal American Eagle and Winchester white box. Both were the same load, 240 gr. JSP, velocity was nearly identical. The Winchester was $40 and the American Eagle was $54, both were 50 round boxes. I asked what the difference was since the loads were about as close to identical as you can get.
The guy said he had no idea other than that Federal did recently have an across the board price increase. Seems like a pretty sharp increase to say the least. Only a guess but I'd
guess the Federal stuff may sit on the shelf a while. I walked out with neither, I was looking for Hornady 240 gr. XTP.

American Eagle has been outrageously priced for about 18 months at Cabelas. 45ACP (100rd) about $55 when Fed purple and WWB were about $40. Similar in other calibers. Never understood it!

ammo costs

There is only one way to keep the costs from continuing to skyrocket, and that is NOT to buy. I know it may hurt, but unless we stop paying their price, they will keep raising their price it until they find where "the market' refuses to pay.

Reloading your own is the correct response to past, present and future ammo prices. Saying dont buy it is worse than the senator who made the inappropriate comment...that if rape was inevitable, the victim might as well lean back and enjoy it.

JMHO

And yet Cabela's had Fed AE 100 pks online for $36.99 for one day about 5-6 weeks ago. Shoulda loaded up. I'm trying to stay under $19.99/50 for .45 and $13.99 for 9mm, for basic range ammo of course. Cabela's has UMC .45 for 19.99 right now. No interest in reloading. I mean NO interest.

I've seen the Federal American Eagle .44 Magnum for $59.95 per box of 50 here. Just kinda ridiculous in my mind.

I suspect American Eagle is going up, but I'm not sure of the circumstances. Gander Mtn in a town I drive through often has had 9mm 124gr for $14.99 on a regular basis. Cabela's here has it for $16.99. Confusing, as GM is usually the highest big box in town.
