My local WalMart started stocking some of the the Federal champion 158g lrn in 38spc, and 357mag lately. How is it? My use will be just target/plinking and realy dont care much for the 130g stuff by Rem, or the WWB stuff. Does this stuff shoot OK? Hard to tell from the packedge, but is it brass cased, or steel?? I am planing to reload soon, and if I buy ammo, I want reloadable brass cases. So if you have shot it, what are your thoughts on it? Thanks.

I shot 2 boxes of the Federal champion 158gr jacketed soft point 357mag. It was brass, and I had only 1 bad round out of 100.

The 357 Magnum is the same 158 gn SJSP loading sold under the American Eagle brand and it's an excellent 357 Magnum target load although a bit expensive for target shooting. In addition I find the recoil of this load to be a bit of a flinch builder for me so I limit my use of it. BTW, muzzle energy is "only" 600 ft.lbs. so it's not a max load, however it is a true Magnum and is also loud enough to get some attention at an indoor range.

The 38 spl. hasn't show up at any of my local Walmarts yet. However I have seen it listed on Fin, Feather, & Fur's web page and see that it's a LRN loading. Prior bad experience with the Blazer 158 gn LRN ammo in the ECM barrel of my model 620 has led me to ONLY shoot jackted ammo in an ECM barrel. I would suggest you avoid this load if you know you have an ECM barrel, if your barrel uses conventional rifling it will probably be just fine.

As for the Federal Champion brand, I've shot a lot of it in both 40 and 45 ACP and IMO it's an excellent range ammunition. In total between the 2 caliber I've shot off at least 3000 rounds and only had one single failure, a dud primer in the 40 caliber. Casings are always brass, it's clean shooting, and I've found it to be quite accurate, so it's an excellent choice for range use. However, the power level of most loads is a bit reduced compared to Self Defense loads so you need to plan on shooting some of the "good stuff" from time to time to keep current with the recoil and noise of your chosen Defense load.

ive never heard of a ECM barrel? My gun is a model 19.

Thanks for the advice! Sounds like it might fill my need till I get reloading. Im not looking for a defence round, just a target/plinking/fun round. Most of my shooting is 38spc reduced load target rounds now, but a few rounds with a not full house 357 is nice to shake the cobwebs out!! Sounds like the mag load will be a nice one for the M19. not a special...but not a blow the gun apart load eather. Thanks

Well wouldnt you know.... sence I posted this, they have been out of stock on them. I guess you have to strike wile the irons hot at WM!!!

Ill keep looking though.

I have not tried any Centerfire Federal Champion, however I have PLENTY of the Champion .22 LR Rimfire stuff and it is one of the best quality .22 LR ammo out there! Can't remember ever having a dud out of the 4 or 5 bricks I have gone through so far. If that is an example of their quality, I would think the Centerfire ammo would be high quality as well. Definitely worth a try!

I have shot the Federal Champion 158 grain JSP in my 4" Model 19 and in my 3" Model 65.

Great ammo. Brass case, no fails to fire in 100 rounds. Shoots to point of aim in the fixed sight Model 65. It sells out fast at the Walmarts here in Colorado as well. I have 4 boxes of it in my stash. :)

The Champion .38 Special ammo is the classic 158 grain lead round nose. Also brass case, no fails to fire, accurate. Standard pressure with pretty low recoil.

Wèll lucked out that Walmart had some and I had money on me!!! I picked up one box of the 38 LRN and a box of 357 JSP. That was all they had. 357 was $24 the 38 was$19. Just gotta get to the range and test it out

The Federal 38 Special 158 gr LRN load is exceptionally accurate. That is the load I used at Camp Perry. I have come close but have never been able to match it's accuracy in my reloads with an umber of 158 gr. cast LRN bullets.

And the sooner the better!

I just loaded up 1000 rounds of .38 spl using plated bullets (indoor range). Cost works out to $7.20/box of 50.

I use the 357JSP in my Marlin 1894 Rifle. They work good together!

Yes I know. I'm buying/getting stuff all ready. Need to find powder locally, then set up my bench

that's good to hear. I'm fairly new to shooting, so I figure the more different amino I try out the better. If nothing else I will have new once fired cases to load

Well lucked out. Went to another WalMart in a diferent town and they had a bunch of it. Picked up a few more boxes of 38spc. They had a stack of 357, but I did not pick any up.

That's what I needed to know.

Just bought 150 rnds at Wammart to test it.

If the 686 likes it, it's available in bulk online for .30/round shipped.

I used a couple boxes of both .38 special and 357 magnum in my 686+ this weekend. The 38 special rounds were great, hardly any recoil. However, the 357 mag round is a handful to say the least, very loud and lots of recoil.
