Habitual offender, shot at police, stabbed the K9, ...
I will not dwell on that.

What a story of courage! Eli is back on duty!

K9 Eli returns to duty after stabbing in Grand Rapids stand-off

Story:
K9 Eli returns to duty after stabbing in Grand Rapids stand-off

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A K9 injured in the line of duty, responding to a stand-off in northwest Grand Rapids back in November, is now cleared for service.

On Monday, the Grand Rapids Police Department welcomed K9 Eli back to work after making a full recovery from a stabbing.

K9 Eli was stabbed eight times after being deployed by police to make contact with a barricaded subject on the city's northwest side.

The dog suffered severe blood loss, and two stab wounds punctured his lungs. He was rushed to the emergency room, underwent surgery, and was released within a few days.

He rested at home with his human partner, Officer Kribs.

GRPD originally said it was uncertain whether K9 Eli would return to service or be retired.

However, GRPD confirmed on Tuesday that the dog was "physically and mentally fit for duty" and would be working full-time.

"On behalf of Officer Kribs, the K9 team, and the department, THANK YOU for the outpouring of support, well wishes, and donations," said GRPD.

Here we go. Sending a trained dog by himself deserves recognition. Next time, send the team.

Fully agree. Our local PD had an issue where a gunman was walking around randomly firing a pistol. They had him isolated in an area where they could follow him or stop him but, instead, decided to let the dog go after him. The dog was killed and then they shot the bad guy. I hate Monday morning quarterbacking but, it was an absolutely stupid decision letting the dog go after a man with a gun when there were no civilians in immediate danger. Something about hindsight and 20/20 comes to mind.

My now ex wife bought me a GS puppy in 1980. He was sold to her as coming from a background of "large boned" Shepards. At 2yrs old he grew into a very big dog, mostly black with tan coloring on his chest and lower legs, his name was Wolf. My son was 4 then and the dog put up with all of the tugs and pulls from the kid. However Wolf did not like other kids under about 4 foot. I think neighbor brats were teasing the dog when he was in the yard, raking the fence and such. Long story abbreviated, I wound up giving him to the Chicago PD. The police officers that picked him up were happy to get him, but they said they'd have to change his name.
Local PD's recently have had a K9 killed and another wounded apprehending the scumbag criminals they were chasing. Those same depts are campaigning for harsher penalties for those harming the dogs.

Here locally one is charged for injuring a police animal the same as injuring a human officer. But this does not come up a lot because these suspects usually come in dead. They never seem to drop their weapons fast enough and show their hands after injuring the canine and the canine handler shoots them.
