Man, my wife and I have let ferrets own us for the past 20 years.
They're inquisitive, invasive, and unstoppable (well a sunbeam will slow them down).

One thing we've learned is NEVER leave anything on the floor you don't want inspected, and dissected.
I forgot rule #1 today (rule 2-100 are other stories) and left some Styrafoam on the floor while I inspected the firearm.
You'd think I'd learned.
And yeah, it could have been worse, only Uriah found it, the other Two missed out.

Whut me?

Mission accomplished, take a break there guy.

Had 8 at one time myself. Fun little guys and never had a mouse or snake in the house, or pair of socks, wash rag, pair of shoes etc. just had to find where they liked to hide them and I was good to go. I couldn't really smell them but when someone came to visit they could.

Yea rule #1 ferret proof everything in the area they will be at if you forget you will learn a quick lesson.

Had one when I was much younger. Awesome little guy. Prone to random fits of biting the **** out of my arm when in play mode!

A rat by any other name is still a rat.

Funny thing is, I've had rats as well, both are inteligent, loveable, and trainable.

Ferrets will potty where they're taught like a cat, come to their names (unlike a cat), and are fierce to the death.
They're more like Rikki Tikki Tavi, they've killed scorpions in the house than my wife and I would have stepped on.

And really, you haven't seen spastic till you've seen a Weasle war dance!

Here's a pic of Temperance (female) that found my underdrawer underwear dresser open.

I'll be darned! I knew people had 'em as pets, but I did not realize you could let 'em run around like cats. Do they stay that clean -- like your photo -- by themselves or do you shampoo them every now and then?

During WWII ,in Europe, meat was severely rationed. My mothers oldest brother had several ferrets that he used to hunt rabbits with to feed the family.

You mean lesion as in a cut / bite ?

If introduced to water, they will bathe-play whenever they have the chance. We had a ferret years ago which I still miss and haven't thought about in awhile. Female and very affectionate. Her name was Cuddles because she woud climb unto your lab and fall asleep. Later, she found a place underneath and up into the mechanics (near the motor) of the fridge. Had a real hard time finding her since they will snooze through anything.

They pretty much have the run of the house.
They ARE NOT outside creatures though, they can survive, but they'll wander off on their own never to be seen again (curiosity rules in a Ferret).

We bathe them about every 6 Months, one thing you have to watch is their claws, we trim them about once a month.

This is Von and Uriah playing in the dawgs bowl.
They'll both paddle away till their soaked.
This was a Summer pic, if you'll note Uriah (Right) has just about doubled his coat for Winter in the first pics.

Sorry meant lesson. But they do have sharp pointy teeth and claws. If you get one like we had that likes toes better not run around without shoes and they love to grab your socks while they are on your feet.:D We also had a lovable Albino the was so loveable until you got under covers and he would climb under and bit the **** out of you toes also. Not very healthy mammals though they cost us a lot of money on vet bills and would swallow anything they could get in their mouth. They live on average about 5-9 years we had one that lived 11 years.

They are as playful as a cat except they are that way whenever they are awake. We had two of the 8 we had, that one would grab his stuff, they take anything, and go to his hiding place, they just pile things up and you had to find it or you wouldn't get your stuff back, the when he walked away to get something else the other would grab it and take it to her hiding place. They would do this all day long with the same pair of socks until nap time fun to watch very energetic and entertaining mammals. They will play (pester) a dog or cat all day long also as they love to play.

I’ve owned ferrets but they are such heart breakers I’ll never own another one. They were really never meant to be domestic animals, they are prone to several kinds of cancer and they have problems with their endocrine systems because they get fixed so young.

At one time I owned 5, I had one and someone gave me four that they couldn’t keep. That’s when I found out that my one was a carrier of a disease called Corona that kills every ferret who isn’t a carrier that comes in contact with it and it’s not a pretty death.

By the time I learned that lesson I owned two ferrets both of whom had to undergo various surgeries to removes cancerous tumors and one had an adrenal gland out.

On a lighter note I got my first ferret while living in a small apartment, she learned to climb up the couch, jump on to the “dining room” table and from there to the kitchen counter. She stole pop tarts and she loved to get into a ham sandwhich and take all the ham off of it until she found the piece she wanted and then steal that.

used to be a guy that was always at one of the shows around Omaha that had a ferret. always wore a field jacket and the ferret was in the top left hand pocket with a harness on. very inquisitive and got into everything. only way to calm him down was buy him a hotdog, he loved them.

Interesting.... where was that?

Scotland, outside of Edinburgh.Every now and then she comes out with a story about the war and air raids and such.
I had a client some years back of about the same age from Germany with her own stories of air raids.I also have a neighbor of the same age as these two whose mother was murdered in one of Stalin's purges.Tough people.

Other than hunting and pest control they're also used in helping wire old buildings in Europe and USA.
They were used in running conduit at Peterson AFB.
Ferrets were also used in wiring up the TV and sounds systems for Prince Charles and Di's wedding.

BTW, Ferrets are illegal in California and New York.
