Do we have the 68 who voted for this???? When you all find out who they are,we will remeber these next election.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is over having a public debate on this issue. If you strongly believe in something you should not be afraid to stand your ground and debate the merits. If you refuse to even debate, people will ask themselves if you really believe in what you say.

I am looking forward to the upcoming debate on all of the gun issues. Even more interested in how the votes will go when all the cards are on the table. Don't forget that your rights can only be taken from you if you surrender them. If you fight to retain them, then it will be called something else. Either way, we the people are the last line of defense for the 2A (or as some call it, "your little book"). The future will be more interesting with the defeat of the filibuster

Steve, I think this is Ayotte's position. I know she is pro gun and anti registration. Maybe a debate will let us know where they all stand so we know who to get rid of come election time.
First step is registration...its not about the children or the mentally disturbed and expanded back ground checks sound good....right, none of us want to see the mentally disturbed have firearms and harm the law abiding citizens.....Problem is...they want to cut SS and raise taxes....that means there is no money to help the mentally disturbed, so that will not change. Unless they are getting help...they are not even in the system and will not be picked up by any background check. I do believe this is a long and hard fight but we need to get it done and keep sending the message "Not to be Infringed"
There is simply no money for helping the mentally disturbed...we spend it in forgein aid to countries that hate us. We need drastic changes to save this country...morally, and financially...not to mention our Constitutional rights.
They can have their debate and lets see where they stand....most of us know where we stand...and losing my Constitutional rights is not negoiatable and never will be. We also need to keep letting them know where we stand and I do that on an almost daily basis. This fight is a long way from over. The administration has lied about the American people wanting extended background checks...using a figure of 90%, and then shamefully using the famlies of children that were murdered to further their agenda when all it does it extend their pain and suffering and will do nothing to prevent another Sandy Hook or keep guns out of the hands of criminals. If every law abiding citizen carried concealed and knew how to use their weapon....crime would be almost non-existant and the criminal population would soon be depleated or locked up.
We must never surrender our rights.

They want a debate, they should be DEBATING PUTTING AMERICA BACK TO WORK, lowering the Deficit,

Leveling the Trade Playing Field, Restoring Livable Wage Jobs, Reading the Healthcare bill they passed,

ENFORCING existing Gun Laws not trying to create new ones.

A real debate would be welcome, but this is a stacked deck... Keep at it.
Another angle to use in personal debates is the preservation of the 2A for future generations. It was granted to us as a protection from predatory government. If it cannot be guaranteed that future generations will never need its protection, then it should remain intact.

One of most important aspects of this issue (background checks) is something no-one seems to talk about. Does it actually work? We've seen examples of people committing crimes with guns after going through the system and not being denied, despite felony records or being adjudicated mentally ill. It doesn't seem like anyone is monitoring this system or testing it to make sure it works. If they are testing the system why haven't we heard the results? It leaves 2 possible explanations. First, they have not done so in which case they are incompetent or, second, they have done so but are so embarrassed by the results they don't want them published. To many people believe these checks will solve the bulk of our "gun problems". No, they won't for many reasons. One of which may simply be it doesn't work as advertised.

filibusters????

No one is afraid of honest debate. This issue does not provide for honest debate. The whole purpose of the filibuster is to protect the minority from being overrun by an out of control majority.. It is a check to absolute power.. You know in 1950, a majority would have voted to keep the army segregated but Truman much to his credit ignored the majority and ordered the arm integrated...at the same time a majority would have voted to keep segregation in place.....

these idiots who voted to end the filibuster did not do so to have an up or down vote, it was a clever way to support what they claim not to support.. Just like the Senator from Maine who voted to end the filibuster on Obama care., She voted against Obama care knowing full well the majority would pass it...if the filibuster ended...so she was for it before she was against it but she forever says she was against it.

Not politicsjust a lesson in how politics works.

I think the problem here is that the important business of the country is being derailed while parties who have no real interest in solving the problems of school safety and so-called "gun violence" are using a terrible tragedy for the sole purpose of advancing a tired agenda of worn-out "common sense" ideas that they intend to slowly and steadily lead to confiscation. We know exactly what they are up to, the country can't afford the wasted time, and we shouldn't have to put up with the lying nonsense and phoney theatre.

the real problem is the country is financially going down the tube and this is a smoke screen.

Buffalohunter60 has hit the nail squarely on the head. The people who we have elected to do our thinking for us have run out of answers to solve the situation the country finds itself in. The house of cards that has been built over the last seven and one half decades of giving out "free bread to the masses", is falling apart and may never be able to be saved. Bait and switch games like the weapons battle are the only political tool left to use and hope that an economic miracle will occur while the country's citizens go at each other over trumped up catastrophies. The country can't sustain 5% unemployment without some kind of bubble to sustain it. They all pop sooner or later. Only time will tell where the next one will be built.
