Oklahoma native, Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins Medal of Honor citation is an incredible read.
An obviously incredibly tough dude, it took the invisible scourge of Covid-19 to finish him off.
Rest in Peace.
Read of his MOH cited actions at Camp A Shau, Republic of Vietnam, from March 9 to 12, 1966.

I wish all young people at some point in their education were required to read the history and citations of those American hero's who have been awarded the modern Medal of Honor. Perhaps some might have a better appreciation of the freedoms that they take for granted.
May you rest in peace valiant warrior.

...During the 38-hour battle and 48 hours of escape and evasion, fighting with mortars, machine guns, recoilless rifles, small arms, and hand grenades, it was estimated that Sergeant First Class Adkins had killed between 135 and 175 of the enemy while sustaining 18 different wounds to his body..

Have you ever been to a military funeral? My nephew was killed while in the navy. They sent the ships van with his buddy sailors who served with him. By the time the taps played and the salute of gun fire went off there wasn’t a dry eye in the place. I was out of work but I managed to give the sailor in charge a $100 dollar bill for the drinks were on me. This was over four decades ago. What a sad funeral.

I was wondering why Adkins received his MOH from President Obama for Vietnam War era heroism, and found this in his Wikipedia write up:

... From 2002, the U.S. Army reviewed all 6,500 recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross to see if any recipients had been short-changed; this led to two dozen medal upgrades in March 2014. In 2013, as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014, the Senate Armed Service Committee passed a provision removing the time limit for Donald P. Sloat and Adkins. On September 15, 2014, President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to Adkins as an upgrade of his 1967 Distinguished Service Cross. During that ceremony, the Medal of Honor was awarded posthumously to Sloat and American Civil War army officer Alonzo Cushing. Adkins was also inducted into the Pentagon's Hall of Heroes...

It is a good thing that justice was done, finally, for these heroes.

I lost a good friend to cancer several years ago..........

........as I was also his Supervisor and he had no family close to the state he asked me to handle his funeral arrangements.

He asked to have a military service as he served in Vietnam as an Marine Corp Artillery Captain. I contacted the USMC and they were very helpful and most efficient.

On the day of the service I showed the Officer and two enlisted detail to an office area where they could rest until it began.

My Friend's Father arrived from New York and knowing that he had served in the Corp during WW2 I asked him if he would like to meet the honor detail. He said yes.

As we entered the office I said gentlemen this is Captain Young's Father, he served on Guadalcanal.

All three Marines came to attention and saluted him.

A very touching, proud moment for his Dad that I was honored to witness.

Rest in peace Amigo.
