I finally found a 4566. I've wanted one for a long time and stumbled into one. I couldn't be more pleased! The only .45s I've ever really yearned for were a 4566 and a stainless Commander-sized 1911A1.

I have a few questions about it. It came w/ the box. On the label, it has the following:8SH-FS-SB (I take it that means, 8 shot, fixed sights, straight back grips?) also there is a "03" to the right of the label. The next line is product code:108225, the serial starts TDP8xxx ( any idea of date of mfr?) Spec Ord:9309(what's that mean?)

I know the pistol is a police trade-in. It has the slightest of marks from a level3 holster and it has been shot a bit, I'd guess perhaps 400-500rds, judging from the bbl and lug and the corresponding lug in the slide. The slide rails are in great shape as is the whole pistol. It has had night sights "2010" placed on it and Hogue grips, which I find preferable to the straight backed factory grips.

I cleaned it up and test fired it Friday and man, was it accurate! I first fired several mags DA, decock DA, repeat until empty.....beautiful DA trigger! Better even than my CZ75s...(now I know why the Koucky brothers copied the S&W39's trigger for the CZ75!) Next was several mags of DA to SA transitions, again beautiful, seamless transition from DA to SA. Then I fired the rest DA to SA for the rest of the mag in both controlled pairs @ 10m & 15m and hammered pairs at 5m & 7m. I couldn't be more pleased and confident in a sidearm!

I have been in gov't service for 29yrs now, (8yrs Jarhead & 21yrs LE) and strangely, this is the first .45 I've owned...My 24yr. old son finds it funny that I've never owned a .45 before this. I'll have to agree that it is odd.The first pistol he bought was a .45 (HK45) and has two others (Ruger 1911 Night Watchman Limited Edition and Blackhawk Convertible 5.5") already!

Anyway, now I just have to find a 4586, then a 4516, then a 4506....Oh hell, I've got the bug and I fear there is no cure!

The product code of 108225 is shown in the "Standard Catalog of Smith&Wesson" as being for a stainless fixed sight 3rd trigger guard pistol made between 1993-1999. The special order code is the date in Julian format, 9309 would code to 1999 (9) 309th day of the year (309), since 1999 was not a leap year it would be November 5, 1999.

Congrats! :) Fine 45. I carried one on duty for over a decade and was well served.

One of my favorite 45 pistols. Enjoy yours! Regards 18DAI

Ahhhh! that's what the Spec.Ord code means....I thought it might be a "born-on date" but couldn't figure it....Thanks a lot for the Information!! I learn something every time I visit here!

Had it out to the range yet? the 4566 and my 617 stay in my range bag just about every trip no matter what else I'm shooting on any given range day when you get to run it through its paces you will see why :D

Ill bet you can not have just one.

They will grow on you. I like my 1006s and 645 also. :D

I must be the only person that actually likes the factory grips. Most people seem to prefer the Hogues.

Yes, absolutely! I ran it through it's paces last Friday. I am very impressed w/ the overall accuracy of this pistol. I had no idea the 4566 would shoot on the level of the 4506.

I consider the 4506 to be superior to the P220 in every respect but, overall size. Some would also say the 4506's and other steel framed pistols' weight is a detractor, but it's something I don't quite agree in, as I believe a quality belt and holster combo, makes weight for the most part a non-issue.

I'd shot 4506s quite a bit back in the 80's & 90's when I lived in California. The 4506's were very popular w/ the LEA's and individual LEOs of Cali back then. They borrowed our ranges quite a bit on the weekends and I would volunteer to RSO for them often.

Shooting and handling the 4566 seemed, to me at least, to be the 4506 "sized-right" much like the 1911A1 Commander is to the 1911A1 Gov't Model.

So yeah, I'm very impressed w/ my 3rd gen "Commander"!

I like the round back factory grips very much indeed and will look for a set of them. The straight back grips never felt "right" for me.

Good post OP!

Enjoy it! A lot of us, young and old, are (re)discovering the quality and pleasures of the third gen smiths. I'm deciding between a 4566 and 4586 at the moment myself!
