Been researching these for a while and going back and forth on individual revolvers. I couldn’t resist this one even though it is outside the Civil War range - based on dates in Model 2 Project database it might be December 1865-January 1866. Nickel, engraved, ivory grips, matching assembly numbers, and 6-inch barrel. Mechanically perfect but finish is a little worse for wear, especially on the right side of the barrel. However, looking at it makes me smile. I’d love to hear opinions about whether this is factory engraved or was commissioned by a distributor. Sending a request for a letter tomorrow - does anybody know what the current wait time is? Thanks for looking!
John

The engraving does look of the period in the New York style.
Very nice.
If it makes you smile then it's a good one
The last letter I sent for arrived before I picked up the gun from the FFL.
It didn't say what I wanted.

Mike - I think so too.

Iby - the engraving was nicely done by somebody - you made me laugh as I also have received more than a few letters that didn’t say what I wanted. Having said that, this one is worth a letter.

I appreciate all the kind words! I’ve had a chance to examine this revolver in detail and compare it to the model 3 Frontier DA that lettered factory engraved. I’m going to guess that it was not engraved by a Master. It’s very good but not great. Plus the ivory grips are not numbered to the gun and don’t fit perfectly. They might have shrunk but could be period additions.
Put the request for a letter in the mailbox this morning so we shall see. Looking at it still makes me smile. I love that the finish wear plus the 7 out of 10 bore and powder residue on cylinder and grip frame suggests it was used rather than put in a drawer.

Have you shown the Frontier DA before?

It’s nice to be the extremely lucky king or it would have been nice to have half the talent of Mel Brooks.

Has anyone seen this symbol on a S&W revolver before. I did a search of engraving and didn’t see anything like it.
