As an aficionado of metal-framed pistols, and also as someone fairly late to the game, I was disheartened when I discovered that S&W no longer manufactures nor supports their third-gen pistol line. I was further disappointed to learn that I apparently missed the boat on a number of these guns in practically new condition being dumped out into the market from distributors clearing old stock. By a few years, no less!

After casually perusing GunBroker, Guns International, and other sources over the course of the last few months I finally hit pay dirt. A dealer a few states over posted an ad for a number of Model 5946's in apparently NOS condition. It was one of the two models I was after (the other being the 5906), and after a quick call it was on the way.

It arrived the other night, and to say that I'm impressed is an understatement. Not only does this thing feel great in the hand, but it has a fantastic trigger for a DAO gun and looks sharp as all hell. It appears to have only been fired once or twice (I'm assuming it was a factory test-fire) and has almost no wear or handling marks to speak of. I probably overpaid for it, and it only came with one magazine, but I'm glad to have it. (Now I have to track down an ex-NYPD model with the absurd trigger weight for comparison's sake. :D)

The serial number prefix on this one is VHM. Can anyone advise what year range that would correspond to? Are there any spare parts/springs I should stock up on, or are there any other quirks I should be aware of?

Nice find. Be on the lookout for mags. I think spring kits are available from Wolf. There are parts out there but that pistol looks a long way from needing them. Just buy what you may need in the future when you see them.

Welcome. I own four 3rd Gens. Many years ago when they were still being made and I was younger and dumber I didn't appreciate them. Now that they're gone I realize what I was missing out on. However, if I had appreciated them, I wouldn't have been able to afford them (they were pricey handguns) back in the Nineties with a young family to support. Well anyway I've got a few now. Trust me you're just getting started.

The date should appear on the box label. Should be around 1998.

Thanks! There are two sets of numbers on the box label that don't seem to correspond to anything. The one to the left of the gun's info, written sideways, is "12374". The one on top of the gun's info, written in standard left-to-right is "011419". Other than those two, the only other numbers on the label are the serial number, SKU, and barcode number.

dont own a 3rd gen gun, but what breaks?

A friend had a 5946 duty pistol that ended up having to get its firing pin replaced three times and the barrel replaced once as a preventative measure, supposedly due to a cracking issue the agency issuing them encountered with the guns. Not sure if that was a bad batch of barrels/pins, unnecessary dry firing, overpressure ammo, etc.
