Finding Age From Serial Number?

can the age of a sw be determined by the serial number? i was given a sw model 59 that has been in the family for a long time. any way to tell how old it is? the serial number is A3685xx

1954-1956, the best resource for S&W is the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd edition, you can find it online.....

I have a 4006 shipped in early August 1990 serial # TFF0108. So yours would be very close to that. Hope that helps.

I first have to qualify that I know absolutely nothing about these revolvers. I do however possess the "book". The best I can do is quote what is written in the serial# table:

Centennial Models 40 & 42

1952-1971 1-30160
1971-1974 "L" Serial Prefix L1-L9861

Just became a member of the site as I received a S&W pistol as a gift today. A 38 S&W Special CTG. Serial # K-1098xx. Any information any one could share with me about this revolver would be helpful. I don't own the S&W catalog yet, but will soon.
