It's a tradition around here for the volunteer fire departments to dress up a ladder truck for Christmas and send Santa around to wave at the kids on Christmas Eve.

They took the truck on a test run around the block (on our frontage road) and the driver noticed that his rear end was getting really hot. He looked in his rear view mirror and saw that the back of the truck was on fire. The next few minutes were helter skelter as other trucks were dispatched to take care of the blaze. Insurance company called, truck is trashed.

Little different christmas fire truck story. A local oilfield worker lost his job due to downturn in activity. In august he took all his savings and bought an old 1977 fire truck which had a bucket attached. In sept he started putting up christmas light. He is currently so busy he has hired other unemployed workers.

We have a similar custom here, and Santa tosses candy from the fire truck. Five years ago, my kids looked forward to it as a harbinger of Christmas and waited for Santa to come by outside in the cold (ok 50-58 degrees here at night). Now, they will not even look out the window to watch the fire truck come by. For those with small children this Christmas, take LOTS of pictures, they grow up too fast.

We have a landscaper here who is doing the same thing, he must be doing well, he is even advertising on TV and radio.
