Being a 3rd generation Callie, I have never seen so many out of control wild fires ever. I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills and the smoke from the fires fill both the Sacramento & San Joaquin valleys with smoke. The prevailing westerly winds brings the smoke to us in the hills. The folks with breathing problems are suffering. The reasons are plenty, stopping the logging, taking the cattle out of the hills, tree huggers, firebugs, politics, drought, forest management, lighting, etc. Take you pick. All I know is the fires are out of control. No wonder of our firefighters are doing their best but the fires continue. Just an old guys rant. Sorry.

The crud has been filling the Vegas Valley for weeks. There's been many days that it's been impossible to see the mountains around the valley and the sky is yellow even when looking straight up.

You have been fouling our nice clean Iowa air for weeks now. I'll be glad when you finally burn out.

Miserable that the season came on early and strong, even with it being wetter. Best of luck for an early end.

I can imagine your misery. There was a controlled burn happening during a couple of our visits to Sequoia-Kings Canyon. Awful, and that was before I had COPD.
Hopefully the snows come early this year.

This year for Calif is the worst..............

We have received your smoke and ashes and hope they get put out soon.

Prevention is at an all time low in our area.
Lack of money or the "New way to fight fire" ?

Now "They" tell you to clear away your area and to protect your property, as best as possible......................

Sad times.

Many Thanks for your kind words , Genery. I also wish these fires will burn. No Thanks to you out out in Iowa

You never know.

This was posted August 22.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said 10 states were sending personnel and equipment. The governor also said he was reaching out to Canada and Australia for help.

"We have more people but it's not enough," Newsom said.

States seem to come together in a crisis. I know I've seen power company trucks from a lot of distant states here in Florida when a hurricane in going to hit.

So sad.... such a beautiful state. I think in cases like this everybody needs to be activated. Let's end the foreign wars and focus on us!

To paraphrase Bob Dylan, the climate are a changing. Get ready for more
of the same.

Same problem here in Phoenix as well.

We have friends in Shingletown in Northern California. They have 5 acres with tall Pine trees and lots of brush. If they want to cut down a dead tree, they need a permit. If they want to gather up dead brush and pine needles, they need a permit. If they want to plant fire resistant shrubs, the need a permit. It's THEIR Property and yet the State tells them what they can and can not do with it. Their fire insurance is ridiculous and getting harder to get each year. No way I would even consider living in CA again.

I live in Bishop, CA.,,, which is on the East side of the
Sierras. This high altitude town of 4,000 is full of smoke from these fires from the Western side off California.
Mostly Republicans live here, as Democrats aren't welcome.
Great hunting, fishing and shooting our firearms in this town of 4200 population.
All white population except for the Indian Reservation.
US Hwy 395 going North and South runs right thru it.
Mammoth Lakes, a very popular SKI area, just full of Condos,is 30 miles North up hwy 395.

Respectfully, Guard is tapped out, but mostly with inside-the-US missions. I was talking a few weeks ago to our TAG during a disaster... He basically had nothing left in the cupboard - multi-month missions for COVID have them strapped, especially for Guardsmen willing or able to take time away from civilian jobs (which are arguably more critical day to day jobs). Basically it is 3x more Guard personnel activated for domestic missions versus international missions. Most people seem oblivious to the real world missions or ops tempo.

The Guard callout for Kenosha WI rioting was sad. Most of the blame is with the elected State leadership, but they have some manning challenges in Wisconsin. On Day Three, after the triple shooting, Gov. Evers finally called for EMAC interstate compacts to get troops from other states. Minnesota was close, but the other main contingents were Arizona and Georgia.

The support to the California wildfires sounds similar. There just is not that much Guard nor federal military capability there to aid the wildfire battle. What is available is deployed, with a fair amount of local airlift from western states and the C-130 aerial firefighting assets MAFFS sourced nationally.

I don't want to sound cruel, but California has not been building their internal capacity to deal with the increasing wildfire threat nor preserving their existing assets. Wall Street Journal had a story this week pointing out the state's wide-scale furlough/release of prisoners has limited the inmate crews available this season. COVID was the reason to let the overcrowded prisons doors open, but the Governor on down didn't seem to be thinking ahead. That is not a hit on the inmate crews, who have done good work and have died on the line, but to the poor decisionmaking.

Still wish the best for all the Californians, but much like the recent energy crisis, California mismanagement seems to cause issues for lots of neighbors.

I am well aware of the wildfire situation writ large. The lines on the map are just that. There is a regional issue, but California gets more than their fair share, as usual.

The only folks getting the big federal FMAG dollars are California.
Everyone else in the West is paying their own way; Only in Cali are regular victims getting FEMA dollars. That isn't necessarily wrong, but 10 feet across the state line in Reno, it might smart a bit.

I agree with all your replies. As a life long resident in Calif. it is our politicians that have goofed up this state. Thought of moving but at advanced age it is out of the question.Guess I'm stuck here till the horn blows.
