so i made it to the range and tried out my new and first gun. it was very hard to get a 16th round in. i mostly shot at about 10 yards, with one clip at 30 yards. the trigger was firm, and i think i shot low and to the right in part because of it. overall i was pleased, the gun operated perfectly. i was shooting american eagle 115 grain that i got for about $16/50.

i haven't fired many other guns, but i thought this one kicked a little more then i expected. it is very light.

The magazine springs are stiff when new. Fill them up with ammo and leave them full for awhile and you will soon have no trouble getting those last rounds in.

If you still find loading mags difficult, the Maglula loader is an excellent product.

As for recoil, I don't think the SD's are particularly hard to shoot. You may want to do a little research on your grip.

Lastly, you will likely catch flack around here if you call your magazines clips.

Welcome to the forum!

Dry firing can help your trigger control; you don't need to use snap caps, but if you do, you can practice clearing malfunctions.

I second the UpLula recommendation...I'm certainly spoiled with mine.

If you want to cushion your grip a little bit, try a Pachmayr grip sleeve. It made my SD9VE much more comfortable.

If you think the 115 9mm kicks, you should shoot the .40.

Very good advice above, but I would use snap caps.

If you firing pin breaks, IT HAS TO GO BACK TO S&W.

swMO, Welcome to the forum.

Like you the SD9VE was my first hand gun. I had many of the same reactions as you when I first used it.
When I first used it I thought the sites were off. I then read up and purchased some snap caps. I cant tell you enough about how much this helped me with trigger control and hence accuracy.
As far as the kick read up or better yet take a class with a qualified instructor and learn proper grip and stance.
Between taking a class, practicing with snap caps and about 750 rounds of live fire, I cant believe how much my accuracy has improved.
As far as getting all 16 rounds in the magazine, I was also unable at first but now after use I can hand load 16 every time.
I love this gun more and more every time I use it.

Happy Independence Day, God Bless America.

"New" used SD9

I found a used SD9 at the LGS and bought it along with an extra Sigma magazine and a holster.

At the range, as usual with me, impact to the left and a few low. I'm a righty.

From a solid rest at 25 yards the sights are properly aligned, so I'll just have to work on learning the trigger. I've been through the same routine with most semi-autos I've ever owned. Being a revolver guy, semi-autos always seem to have inferior triggers to me.

Came home and tried a little dry fire with a Model 10 2" snubby I own just for comparison. Man, what a difference! Smooth, even break with the front sight staying rock steady with the Model 10.

But I'm determined to learn this gun so I guess I'll get some snap caps and work on it until I do. Although the gun is used it doesn't appear to have been fired much. I don't want to lighten the trigger - I believe with a striker fired gun that increases the chance of a possible negligent discharge if the pistol is ever used in the real world for self defense.
