Back in 2006 I was looking for a small compact auto in 9mm. I saw an advertisement for the new soon to be released Kimber Custom Shop Aegis II. I really liked the way it looked. Two-tone, Custom Shop melt treatment, and the ball grooved Slim Grips. Seemed to me would make a great little carry piece.
Anyway, I purchased one in the fall of that year from a Master Kimber Dealer in South Texas. The gun shop owner told me that it was a special gun because it was the serial number 1 Kimber Aegis with serial KUFA001 and they must have sent it to him by mistake. Well you know the old saying; Buy the gun not the story. So I bought the gun.
About a month later I was at a local book store looking at gun periodicals and picked up a copy of Shooting Times 2007 Handgun buyers guide. The New Kimber Aegis was on the cover. Looking at it I noticed the serial number; KUFA003. Saw another magazine, Guns & Ammo 2007 Annual Handguns with another Kimber Aegis on the cover but it was the left profile so I opened the magazine up and found it on page 18; serial number KUFA002. Now the story the gun shop owner told me seemed to thickened up a little so I went ahead and bought both magazines.
Since I haven't had a chance to shoot it before seeing the magazines I decided just to keep it pristine and wait and see. I'd take it out of the safe from time to time over the years to wipe it down, run a lubed patch down the barrel, handle it, then put it back. That's what I was doing today so I thought I'd share this story.
Although, not the end of the story. In 2017 I was reading some gun blogs and ran across a talk forum (not this one) conversation of someone wanting to date their Kimber pistol and was told to call Kimber Customer Service by which they would give him an accurate date of when the pistol was shipped. I decided it would be fun to call them to see if I could get anymore information on my little 001 Aegis.
When I called Kimber Customer Service I got through fairly quickly. I told the gentleman I would like any information that I could get on my Kimber Aegis by which he ask for the serial number. I gave him my number, KUFA001.
The phone went silent for a few seconds then he said "Hmmmm" then ask if I could hold on for a minute. He came back on the line and said "well it appears you have the first one made and it shipped out on August 29th, 2006".
He went on to tell me that the very first run had the KUFA prefix; K=Kimber, U=Ultra Frame, F=9mm caliber, and A=Aegis Model. He did also say that the low serial number pistols were normally reserved for VIP's and major gun writer reviews. I ask but he said that Kimber had nothing in place currently for any written documentation regarding their products. It's been a few years now. Maybe I'll try again.
