Put 100 rounds down range tonight, through my newly acquired (and obviously little used) 10-5 2". Shoots very well, as expected. Absolutely no function issues. I do have to say that I shoot the gun differently and not as well, as my 3" HB 10-8. The 10-5 does tend to shoot a little right and a little low......just like the 10-8... except more so. This is with the same hand loads.
It took me 30 - 40 rounds to realize that the issue is the stocks. The gun now wears a set of modified S&W target stocks, which I found when I bought the gun. I couldn't stand the "coke bottle" shape of the targets, especially the HUGE flare at the bottom. Just does NOT work for my hand - and not an ergonomic design, anyway, given the over-skinny dimensions of the upper part of the grip frame (and stocks). I also couldn't stand the square butt grip frame of the 10-5, for the same reasons. So, I "round- butted" the grip frame.....and modified the stocks to suit. MUCH better than the original.
However, as my other M10 (the 10-8) wears Pac Compacs, the feel is just too different. I really like nice wood stocks....and intended to make a nice new set for the 10-5, from a piece of Bolivian Rosewood I have. Not now, I think.
Or, perhaps I'll make an identical set from the Rosewood, for both. The point is, I intend to alternate carrying the two guns, so I want to be as close as possible with both (in my shooting results). So, I'll order another set of Pacs for now.
Maybe to some, I am being OCD about this.....but, I want to be as proficient with both guns as possible. I only see that as a smart "policy". I had sworn off wood stocks months ago, due to pain from recoil (I have RA). But, darn it, I do like them. Perhaps I should just face reality now and go with function over form, I don't know.
The things we must accept as we get older....... da%%it.
