First time owner - M&P .40 with loads of questions

You've had that gun for a few days now and haven't field stripped it yet? What's the matter boy?!? Get busy and get familiar with that thing!!!

Light

I have a Crimson Trace light on one of my two 9c's works great. Lights are nice but remember a light mounted on your gun will be sweeping the same point as your barrel:eek: If your going to be using it to identify a bump in the night keep that in mind.

I discovered the MPro-7 gun cleaner and MPro-7 LPX lube. It has been a great product. I also ran into a can of "official" S&W cleaner that is safe for all finishes. I grabbed it. We'll see, but I think I am just going to stick with the MPro-7. I looked into the Frog Lube, but after searching thru the various forums and reviews- MPro-7 seemed to have the edge (taking nothing away from the good product that Frog Lube is though).

Congrats on the new piece. I have the exact same gun, except I bought the range and carry kit. Probably would've been a worthwhile investment for you considering you bought extra mags and a speed reloader already.

I haven't really done anything with mine other than shoot it and clean it so far (as well as take a CCL course) but I'm looking at tactical lights and holsters which is how I stumbled upon this thread.

Hope ammo isn't too hard to find, I've had a little trouble but I'm relatively stocked up right now. Be sure to look at JHP's for a self defense round if you haven't shot anything but FMJ so far.

Well it's been a little while now and I've got about 800 or so rounds through the M&P .40 and she is working beautifully. I've since cleaned and treated twice with frog lube and find that the stuff really works well. I haven't had one malfunction or FF period.

One weird thing I have noticed, is that the front sight is missing it's white dot. I swear there was one there before and now it's gone. No clue how that could have happened because I thought it was painted on.... ? The rear sights still have white dots.

The wife did end up getting the P938 which is tiny! She's only had it out once and from what I can tell it's not nearly as accurate as the M&P .40. However it will be much easier to carry once our permits come back. Just FYI 90 days is a really long time. Anyway, the only issue we are having now is finding extra mags for the P938. She only got one 6 round with the gun and even with her small hands her pinky hangs off the bottom. I really only can fit 2.5 fingers on the handle. So we are on the hunt for 7rd grip extender mags which are impossible to find at the moment. Some are on e-bay going for $100+ which is crazy.

I was looking yesterday and can't find any .40 online at all. I wish I would have known it was going to get this bad. I would have picked up 1,000 rounds all at once. If anyone spots bulk Federal FMJ target round cases please msg me.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but...

When your wife was done shooting, she pointed the gun right at the camera. I'm assuming you were holding it. The most important rule of gun safety is muzzle control. Never cover anything with the muzzle you don't want to destroy.

Yes, I know the gun was empty and had the slide locked back. Still, it's a good habit to develop that muzzle control.

I say this with the utmost respect.

Be sure to budget some money for for some really good training. I'd try to find a two day defensive handgun class. take it with your wife. It will be money very well spent. There's a lot more to concealed carry than just taking the basic class.

I completely understand. And yes, we both have taken safety classes along with growing up around guns. Some times IE* at the gun shows it's just impossible to not point a gun at someone. She just emptied it and as you said the slide was locked back. I'm not going to flame you but I think she was as safe as she could be. I trust her, she's a good lil redneck.

I found some Winchester white box 40 at two lgs the other day but they're asking for $45 a box of 50! I got 250rds of Remington UMC that I got back in December. Been itching to go to the range but don't want to run out of ammo. If I didn't live in an apartment, I totally would start investing in reloading equipment.

I too get it that the slide was locked back. That does not make her actions more forgivable.

I go to gun shows and I never muzzle anyone. When I look at guns at the LGS I never muzzle anyone. It's not that hard.

I sure never muzzle anyone at the range no matter what.

There are four basic rules of gun safety and she broke two of them badly.

I don't mean to come off as harsh, but you two really need some time with a quality defensive handgun instructor.

Well seems like I'm the one who will get flamed.

Anyway, to get this post back on track. I'll remove the links and move on.

So does anyone have any idea what could have happened to the sights? I really thought they were painted on.

Stock sights suck, you can hit that divot where the dot was with white nail polish or white auto touchup paint...

I like Trijicon HDs, 10-8 and Warren Tactical are very nice too.
