First time SD9VE owner

Just picked up an SD9VE a few weeks ago, and love the gun. I've shot a decent amount of Hand guns in my time, just never owned one. Have probably put 100 rounds through the gun thus far, and like the accuracy. As i've read and watched on youtube, the #1 complaint is the trigger. I've seen this resolved in two different ways, the Apex trigger kit, and the Apex spring replacement. It's my understanding that changing only the trigger, will limit the pre and post travel, as well as reduce the pull weight by a pound, where as changing the springs simply reduces the trigger weight by 2 1/2 pounds while still traveling the same distance.

My question to you is, what has been YOUR preference thus far and why. Just looking to see what some of you more experienced guys have to say.

Also, would a rail laser be a decent addition to the gun? If so, are some of the more moderately priced ones even worth looking at?

Hello and Welcome to the forum!

The trigger pull on the SD will get better with continued use. Some here have experienced problems with light strikes after installing the APEX spring kits, others have not. Since my SD is for HD and reliability is paramount, I won't be installing the springs.

I have to agree with scwv67 in regards to the Apex trigger. I bought my SD9VE for home defense as well and feel that the factory trigger works great for me. As a matter of facts, I like the trigger as it is.

I guess it comes down to a personal choice, I chose not to change the trigger.

One more vote for leaving the firing components stock. If I am trying to demonstrate marksmanship on a range I just steady down and pull slowly. I have tried some quicker "self defense" pulls and I am sure I would hit the attacker, not an issue. I do want the gun to fire every time so the striker spring remains stock.

I did buy a 1mm longer slide stop bar which really saves my fingers when removing the slide for cleaning. If the gun ever goes back to S&W the original stop bar will be in it.

I prefer the trigger as it came from the factory. When the adrenaline kicks in during a serious social encounter a heavier a trigger adds a bit of a safety margin against unintentional firing.

I've got a LaserLyte CM-MK4 that I use when I feel the need.

It's small, light and compact and puts a full circle of dots on the perpetrators chest that expands 1" per yard.

I had a Sigma for a short period of time. It was well broken-in, and I never felt that the trigger had anything to apologize for. I tried a new SD9VE, and could see that the trigger needed to be worn in. Just give it some time, dry firing, and shooting.
