When installing a new style cylinder on a 686-3. What part of the hand gets filed or stoned? Frame side or sideplate side?

Normally, neither side gets stoned. Is the hand a std size or "oversize". You should not need an oversize hand unless you have shot the gun a lot, for many years. The timing has to be set on each chamber by the lockup (carry-up) - this is done with the teeth on the extractor. Each tooth has to be fitted if needed to get the tight lockup. Not the hand. Not recommended for novice gunsmiths - easy to screw up if you don't know how. Good luck.

Thanks Judge, It's a standerd size hand. The old style cylinder is no longer made and I wanted a unfluted cylinder. Ordered a unfluted new style from Brownells but I didn't know it would take so much to get it to work.
I think I'll just send the cylinder back to Brownells.

A trick I have seen from SW factory on a couple of old guns is they left the extractor ratchets "fat" and shave the face of the standard hand on the frame side. That is so when the gun wears loose, you can get it tight again with a standard hand which is shaved a bit less on the frame side. very cool idea, too bad they didn't do it on all their guns. I suspect these were built back in the days when real gunsmiths built the guns....

Is it possible to fit the old extractor to the new cylinder? The extractor is the part with the ratchets that need fitting. Then put in a new standard hand and you might be set.

Not selling it just yet. I have talked to a few others that have done this with no fitting needed. But the way my luck is

The old extractor has the groove and pins. The new have a D shape and the star is not the same shape.

Somtimes they can be a "drop in" but only when when your new cylinder is the same style as the old one and you can reuse the "fitted" extractor.

Roger that.

Not trying to be a butt head but has anyone on here tried to install a new style cylinder in place of the old style?

Jul - Use the cylinder and shave the beak on the hand just a little on the left hand side (when holding gun in hand). Just a little at a time and try it, it may take 1 or 2 hours to do it. If you hurry you may end up nedding a new hand. Remember just the part that touches the cylinder.
