Fixed Rear Sight

I haven't used one but after researching and taking profile into consideration, I really like the Daniel Defense for a fixed sight.

Matech and Knights Armament have good reviews, they are backup sights though. You don't need to flip them down.

If you want a dedicated iron sight and not a BUIS, I'd go with the carry handle.

I use the Midwest Industries that came on my 15A as a back-up. Built like a tank, but elevation adjustments have to be made with the front sight.

The carry handle is good. The Sport originally came with a Troy fixed rear sight; it's gov't issue stuff, and just fine.

My Sport came with a no name (UTC?) adjustable rear sight, I replaced it with a Troy fixed sight and have been happy with it. Unlike most AR rear sights, both apertures are on the same plane.

I put an LMT on mine. I found one on ebay, for under $100. Tactical Adjustable Rear Sight - Sights - Accessories

The troy fixed is great, it is inexpensive ($45-$60) and robust, the apertures lock down nicely, and it is a same plane sight like others have mentioned. LaRue and DD also have fixed rear sight offerings, but cost more money with no real operational benefit.

The LaRue and DD are A2 style apertures (not same plane) but on the LaRue website you can add a same plane xs aperture for an extra $25 dollars, and will bring the cost to over $100 dollars (they do attach with a QD mechanism though).

In short you will not be disappointed with the Troy offerings (the DiOptic aperture is an A2 aperture, the standard round apertures are same plane)

I prefer same plane so the Troy just made sense to me, but I was curious about the DiOptic.

I am not in the military or LE so I don't really have a need to adjust elevation on my rear sight, If I did feel that was important I would have went with a LMT A2. I wonder how many people do switch the range on the rear sight while taking fire?

TangoFoxtrot,

I just mounted a Troy fixed rear sight on my 15-Sport. WOW! The Troy rear sight (both fixed & folding) is worlds better than the MagPul MBUS. The Troy sight totally blows away a standard A2 sight.

Makes me wish I never bought a Magpul MBUS. Oh well. Another part in the spare parts bin for a future build.

Don't know about adjusting while taking fire, but I like having the option to adjust elevation on the rear site on the go...much more convenient than adjusting the front post.

I recently bough a LMT sight to go on one of my rifles. It was a take off from a rifle a user on another board purchased and got it fairly cheap. You could also cut down a carry handle and have the same setup.

I thought the Sport came with an LMT sight, back when they came with the fixed sights?

Back before S&W changed over to Magpul MBUS rear sights, the 15-Sport and 15-22 were issued with the LMT A2 sight. I have one in my spare parts box. The other is on loan to a friend until he can buy a different one.

Japes, check that one off the 15-22...I thought it was LMT, but the one we took off my son's wasn't. Compared side by side with a real LMT and they are quite different. It seems more comparable to the UTG that I put on my .22 AR. Before I saw this, I assumed the A2 sight on the 15-22 and the Sport were the same, but now I am not so sure.

Next time I dig out my spare parts box, I'll dig out that A2 sight. I'll pay a visit to my friend and compare them. Now I wonder which one I loaned out.

On a folding rear Troy do you have to push a button in order to fold it down un like a Magpul BUIS.

True. If I'm in a two-way-range situation and I have to deploy the BUIS, then the fact it locks into place is very reassuring. It's not spring loaded, but all it takes is a flick of the thumb to deploy.
