I live in the strange state of Illinois. I am looking to apply for a Fl. CCW Permit. Floridas web page states that any NRA training class can be used to show training documentation. Has anyone used a class other than the CCW class to quailify? This is a reprint of the fl. page:

Acceptable Training Documentation
1.A photocopy of a certificate of completion of any of the courses or classes listed below. Do not send your original certificate because it cannot be returned.
2.A copy of any document that shows completion of the course or class or evidences participation in firearms competition;
3.An affidavit from the instructor, school, club, organization, or group that conducted or taught the course or class attesting to the completion of the course or class by the applicant below. Be sure to submit the original (notarized) affidavit but make a copy for your records because it cannot be returned.
Completion of any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission or a similar agency of another state;
Completion of any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;
Completion of any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law enforcement, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school, utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association, Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, or the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services;
Completion of any law enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;
Presents evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or military service (persons serving in the United States Armed Forces may submit a copy of their Military ID Card; discharged persons may submit a copy of the DD-214);
Is licensed or has been licensed to carry a firearm in this state or a county or municipality of this state, unless such license has been revoked for cause;
Completion of any firearms training or safety course or class conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association-certified firearms instructor.

Have you checked with a local firearms trainer? We have several in WNY that offer combined Utah/Fla non-resident qualifying classes, including a paperwork session after the 4.5 hour class for submissions to both states, all for about $80.

Local training is avail., but I have numerous NRA classes. If they will work why spend more?

Go back and re-read the requirements. It does not say a ccw course. It says any firearms safety or training course. If you've got a certifcate of completion etc., send it in.
Most of my buddies that got the FL CCW were veterans, so a DD214 was sufficient.

"Completion of any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;"

Sounds like you're done.

I read it the same way. The fees are nonrefundable, but I am sending my packet tommorow. It takes 90 days. I'll keep you posted on my progress. All Fla ccw classes want extra for range time, but I can not see that requirement anywhere.

FL does not require 'range time', or any other specific course material.

I meant to ask, have you looked at UT CCW permits? They require about 6 hrs of class room talk, no range time. The classes these days are running about $80-100. But UT permits are good for 5 yrs and only cost $5 to renew. I think it was around $60 for the orriginal. FL renewal needs paper work again plus a lot more money, (just about what the orriginal costs).
Both are good in about 30 reciprocal states.

In our backward state people are charging $150.00 for the Utah class. Then you have to file with the state. Fl.just went to 7 years on their permit.

I just took the Utah CWP class this last Sunday, paid $40 ($65 for the 10 person minimum - we had about 18 or so, so got it much cheaper).

The permit is about $65, fingerprints $10, fingerprint card $3, plus a 2"x2" passport quality pic, which I did myself, plus shipping the package (about $5). Renewal is $10 plus copy of driver's license and another 2x2 pic; you get a reminder. Past 30 days late is $7.50, past one year and you start all over again.

I *believe* that FL and UT are right around 37 states +/-, with perhaps FL being slightly better, but not much.

The instructor told us that the state of UT is actively selling UT CWPs both within the state and out of state. Currently, they're running around 70k requests per year, with about half of them out of state. As a side benefit, $4.5M per year, that's not a bad income for really easy work processing permits applications.

Of course, the real payoff is in the end game: lower crime rates.

Packet hit the post office at noon today. I'll wait 2 weeks and call them for a progress report.

I'm a bit late to the party, but...........

It sounds like you have it right. Prior to my move to Florida from Illinios I got my Fl permit. It was no problem with being out of state. When I moved south I sent in a change of address and it was painless.

Don't forget to change your drivers license. I got a fine for that one.

In regards training, any NRA certified course is ok. I am a certified NRA Instructor and I don't know of any NRA class less than 8 hrs. That has caused some problems in Florida. The state intended everyone to take a 8 hr course but the law wasn't specific enough. I heard of two instructors loosing their NRA certification teaching a 3 hour CCW course at a gun shop.

It seems to be a sore subject down here.

Does it have to be a CCW class or will any NRA class be okay?

I mailed my packet on 3/24. The check has not been cashed yet. 4/3Anyone know how long it takes for Fla. to process?

mentioned

Yeah I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, (I didn't really want to read through 3 pages of posts lol) but you can substitute military weapons cert paperwork for the NRA or CCW class in the state of FL. But yeah I hate to break it to you, the wait times for mail ins is pretty bad right now, everyone has a reason as to why, I personally think the influx is just due to the tightening of reciprocating states paperwork requirements. I personally just drove down to Punta Gorda and I had it within a week. But then again, I live in state lol
