I recently moved further out of town and my FM reception suffered. In the past I've used 75 ohm folded dipole antennas. Is that still the best option or does some fancy powered antenna work better?

TIA

Not much info to go on.......how far out did you go?

Meanwhile this quote from an article in the newspaper

I've never found any of the amplified radio antennas I have tried to be worth the box they are packaged in. Perhaps there is a great one out there, but I have yet to find it. But don't despair. Something simpler and less expensive might provide better reception.

Did you know that an ordinary set of unamplified TV rabbit ears makes an extraordinary FM radio antenna? Even the simplest model will do a fine job

I havent seen rabbit ears in years do they still sell them.

A REAL antenna is still best.

A REAL antenna is still best.

Salesmen still LIE!
The MAGIC amplified device will have a lower signal to noise ratio.
The MAGIC device will yield amplified signal and amplified noise.
Move up from the folded dipole to a Yagi type antenna.
The yagi will be directional with GAIN!

They do, Walmart has them and they are inexpensive.
RCA Basic Indoor Antenna $9.99

Don't pay extra for a amplified antenna, I have never found one that outperformed a basic set.

I do have cable, also have rabbit ears attached to the TV in case the cable is down or having problems.

Believe this, the HD OTA is a better picture than cable provides.

I receive about 26 stations with the rabbit ears, but I also live close to the stations which are broadcasting.

Grab a set of rabbit ears and see what you can pick up OTA.

shooting from the hip on this one, but essentially RF tends to follow a common set of rules and this does a decent job across bands commonly used in aeromodeling
it coveres a good many antenna designs, touches on some design concepts and computes results
it would be best to pick a freq as close to the one you use while you play with combinations

My favorite morning show just moved from a station that has carpy signal at my house to a station that has a carpier signal.

I think I'll run down & pick up a set of eabbit ears. For $10 how far wrong can I go?

Thankfully they stream online and also have channels on cable TV. ;)

Get one of those antennas you put on top of your house for TV and run a cable w/FM adapter into your set up.
