I had a chance to handle the FNH 5-7 last weekend and and found it to be a real treat. Being a lefty it didn't take long to get used to the forward safety and mag release. Shot like a dream with minimal recoil and takedown to clean it is a snap. If it weren't for the price tag, I could see one in my future. Anyone else played with one and what did you think?

it left me kinda flat.
nice little race car of a gun but in the crucible, I couldn't determine it's purpose in life.
It would be a great varmint and plinking cartridge in the right platform.
The pistol is not that platform

Tried it and wasn't impressed at all. Waaay overpriced for what it is. I guess I just don't understand purpose of 5.7.

Had one for a bit when they first came out. This was back when the ammo was actually close to original spec. Today the ammo is downloaded. If you want the performance of a 5.7 and the penetration it no longer has get something in 22 mag.

Military Arms Channel did a review of the 5.7 and the 22mag. You can look it up on YouTube

I don't even know if it's a 22 or not. If so, you could get plenty of penetration by reloading green tip bullets for it.

I've got a physician friend that has one. He paid right at $1K for it about a year ago. He loves it, me kinda lukewarm. 5.7 blue tip SS 197 was $20/ 50 at last week's Orlando fairgrounds show. Green tip SS 198 was $45/50. They had plenty. Joe

I would be interested in 5.7x28 in a good bolt gun like a CZ. Reloadable and a great round for shooting gophers here in Montana!!

Is this round offered in any good bolt guns?

Randy

Randy,
I know FN offers the 5.7 round in their semi auto PS90 carbine but I saw one the other day in a shop and it looks like a shoe box with a barrel sticking out of it. No aesthetics at all. And with a short barrel it's far from a varmint rig. If I pulled one out at hunting camp, I'd probably be banned for life.

My thoughts as well for the most part.
The 5.7 seems to only turn up in the pistol and the P90 SMG.
Ammo has always been military oriented with sporting use offerings ignored.
These things aside, it could be brilliant in an array of rifles and carbines, perhaps morph into a rimfire replacement.
it's just failed to make those inroads

It was designed for vehicle crews, operators of crew-served weapons, support personnel, special forces and counter-terrorist groups. It WAS NOT designed for you to awe at at a hunting camp. With 100 round mags and 900 round per minute rate of fire.

If you hold one you'd see it actually shoulders very nice and natural. Easy to aim and fire.

There is a 5.7 AR-15 upper available (or there was). It used the PS90 magazines and ejected the cases out of the AR mag well. I have no personal experience with it. Google AR57.

^^ This ^^

The 5.7 family was largely designed during the Cold War for "people who don't shoot for a living" in the armed forces. I think the SF interest came later.

It was intended to replace 9mm pistols and SMGs. The key advantage of the round was its ability to penetrate body armour and protective helmets out to 200 meters. The original spec ammo is way better in that respect than 9mm or 45 could ever dream to be.

Thanks for all the input. I'm still intrigued by the pistol, just not sure what for.
