It's nap time here how can if be where you are?? To early:D

After Hurricane Charlie we had a FEMA camp right down the road as you would say off I 75 .Hundreds of trailers. Those trailers stayed for over a year and it became a slum, people would not get out or still had no place to go. Crime, rapes, theft all kinds of stuff.

I worked in disaster relief in some other small cities inland and the FEMA boys came in with a giant semi trailer, big screen TV, conference table, computer hook ups you name. Had it's generator running the whole time. Their mission? Was to give out blue tarps for roofs, Only problem was this city was all mobile homes and they were gone, no roofs, plus FEMA had no tarps!! The 5 guys and the million dollar trailer did nothing!

Now it's NAP time!:D

Don't know because I live far from there, but hasn't FEMA worked wonders with the hurricane victims up in the NYC - New Jersey area? I know congress gave them billions of $$$. Anyway thats what the news has said bout FEMA.

Yep just read a report on it yesterday or day before. Same scenario. Folks without power, food, water, blankets, heat plus it's worse up there due to the cold. At least in the South you will not freeze to death.

Back to the OP:
The problem with freeze dried and dehydrated foods is that they need water to be used. In a real SHTF scenario, potable water will be in very short supply.
Of course if you can afford all this fancy food, I guess you can afford a nice 1,000 gallon water tank too. Although that does making buggin' out a bit troublesome.

Fish hooks. Plenty of fish hooks..."and a star to steer her by" 'cause I'll be headin' out on that big blue prairie, for one particular harbor.

My guess is the FEMA workers are all nice and warm, regardless of where they're supposed to be helpin.

Back to the original post. Its okay to be prepared but most of those large pre-packs are heavy on the pasta and grains with little meat. Its easier to buy your own survival personal survival supplies based on your family's needs and tastes. As to FEMA, I doubt that they will be making house to house searches for food. Its the neighbors I would worry about. They will be drawn to the smell of stew cooking and they will kill you for your supplies, justifying their actions by saying that "little Sally and Timmy are hungry" and you are just a mean ol hoarder. As far as Rush and his buddies go, they probably have huge supplies of Mountain House meats and freeze dried goodies in #10 cans stored in their luxurious underground bunkers surrounded by burly guards armed with machine guns. They aren't about to eat the stuff they advertise for us peons to eat.

My .02

Charlie

I buy 12 can packs of tuna in water at Costco. The sell by dates at this moment is 2015. I don't need a fancy meal in a SHTF situation, I need food and I can drink the water in the can too. Meanwhile, we use it anyway so it's no big deal to keep some on hand.

Any quantity of food you stock up on is primarily for bugging-in, don't expect to carry more than 3-5 days worth and even then, pack food has to be hi-energy, compact. A few of those plastic 55gal food drums will store water for your freeze dried food, just be sure to periodically change it or bleach it.

If SHTF doesn't happen, You can still look at those expensive #10 can preps as a senior days food insurance policy. They are good for 35 years and food will most certainly be more expensive that far into the future. Plus it tastes better than cat food (if your taste buds still work) and is more nutritious.

Go down to REI or Big 5 and buy some of the mountain house individual camping packs and try them out for yourself, they are cheap and will let you experience the same items as available in bulk cans. How can you lose?

I am certainly no prepper, but I just have to say that Backpacker's Pantry stuff is head-and-shoulders above Mountain House, on the palatable scale.

This is gonna gross some of you out but its something that needs to be considered when talking about long term survival.

One of the biggest problems you're gonna deal with in long term is scurvy. The availability of fresh veggies to prevent scurvy.

I spent a great deal of time working with the Alaska Natives on the Western Coast of Alaska on the Bering Sea, both as a XO and CO of Native National Guard Companies. I was concerned about scurvy and how they combat or prevent it. They've been doing it for hundreds of years without fresh veggies in the long winters.

OK, we know they are hunter-gathers, that's a given. The animals and birds they live on are for the most part veggie eaters. Their stomachs contain the veggies they consume..........so, you want to prevent scurvy, you need to eat the stomach contents of the animals/birds you gather for meat.

Not as bad as you think. Cut you your rabbit, put them in the pot, throw in the stomach contents and you have your stew that will fill you with protein and help you combat scurvy.

Kraig you needn't worry about me showing up for dinner;-)

Scurvy?? Vitamin C is readily available or found especially here in Florida. Take a vitamin, eat a potato have some fruit drink a fruit drink.
