There are good arguments for both. Since most of my shooting and training was in the LE setting, and most of that with semi-auto pistols, they are the better choice based on skill set, IF using a handgun. I would not feel at a real disadvantage with any of my revolvers, but realistically the best choice I have is my AR. Better ballistics, better hit probability due to ergonomics etc, and an Aimpoint H1 for more rapid target acquisition, with the mounted Fury to ensure adequate light to know what the potential target is. This year will be the first since 2007 that I will not be doing a carbine course with Pat Rogers due to my schedule prohibiting it; these classes are the best and most recent training I have had.

If someone is actually trying to get in the house I have a big problem, as they have already come over a 6' fence and are not discouraged by the sound of the dogs (who are not kidding when they sound off).

defense handgun which do you prefer, a revolver or a semi automatic?

I prefer... whatever I can get my hands on first! However... to be serious, a SA GI 1911-A1 routinely sits on the nightstand day and night. When I'm in the office, I will usually have either that pistol or a 4" 66-3 near at hand. It is loaded either with .38 Special 125 gr. JHP's or else my last six rounds of .357 Magnum Remington Golden Saber 125 gr. JHP's.. I also like my 625-2. Both it and the SA GI are loaded with plain Jane 230 gr. FMJ's. It's what I have available. Sometimes when I'm feeling kind of old fashioned and retro I load up my 21-4 w/ some 240 gr. cowboy action loads.

Either a revolver firing large, low velocity, rapidly expanding slugs, (.44 Special, .45 Colt, SWCHP's etc.) or an Auto firing 45 ACP with SJHP's. Chief concerns for me are one shot stopping power (less to explain later if you didn't spray a lot of bullets), and not troubling any neighbors with a new hole in their wall from an over-penetrating round.

That said, I'd still grab my tactical 12 gauge pump given sufficient time. Nothing like the "cha-chunk" sound of a 12gauge round being chambered in the night to end a fight before it begins...and that's a lot easier on the wife's new carpet.

Semi.

I don't know what else to write, but I need at least 10 characters...

Just put a bunch of dots in like so

...........

A lot comes down to where you live, how far are your neighbors and the layout of your home/apartment.

I live in a modern built townhouse/row home. My neighbors are on the other side of my wall. Im not sure whats in between but i do know it has something to prevent fire from spreading. Dont know if its just brick or some fire retarded material but i doubt its brick/concrete. My home is also long but narrow. From back to front you can play soccer but side to side is only 20-30 feet or so. Although an AR is better at HD (SD bullets have less penetrating ability through drywall then a handgun or buck shot, lowest recoil, good flash hider and lots of ammo) im not sure that its good for my specific house.

Since we spend most of our time at home in the evening and at night i my HD gun has to have night sights and a light. I use a HK USP 9 with those options

A Model 10-5 loaded with +P 158gr. LSWCHP lives in a shelf in the head of my bed. My carry gun, a 640 with the same load, is in reach all the time if not actually on my person.

I have an old 12 gauge side-by-side sawed to 20 inches and a good supply of #4 buck, but unless my quiet little seniors' apartment complex is invaded in force the double will stay in the closet.

Sig 239/.40 or 1911 within reach...12 ga. pump in the closet, which is about six steps from the bed.

Whatever I can get my hands on. Really, that's no time to get picky. I don't currently own a revolver, but a nice S&W or Colt would make me just as comfy as a Glock or Sig.

That would be a revolver, particularly the ubiquitous J frame whether it's tucked in my pocket or riding on my hip. My personal reasons why are that it's small enough to carry with me anywhere, in addition to being a platform that I'm familiar and proficient with.
