For Australians, '60's folk music fans, newcomers to YouTube, and all who appreciate the female voice

Well, now I know I have too much time on my hands. Normally I wouldn't start such a post, but if I can contribute a bit to anyone's enjoyment of life on this troubled planet tonight, wonderful.

I am continually amazed by what can be found on the internet, but especially on YouTube. Who made all these old videos, how they even survived to this day, and how YouTube aficionados get ahold of them and know how to upload them -it's all beyond me.

I was a youngster(elementary school) with four older siblings during the mid '60's when this song was recorded by the Australian group "The Seekers". My brothers and sisters constantly played popular music in our home, sang it, and danced to it. The 'folk' hits were among my favorites. Having an artistic temperament and later becoming a voice major in undergraduate school enhanced my appreciation of melody, harmony, and what it takes to sing well. I especially enjoy hearing the female voice, particularly the soprano or mezzosoprano.

All that to suggest that the lead in this group, Judith Durham, has been gifted with perhaps the purest, sweetest, most natural sound I've ever heard. Listen to the following(and other singles listed on the right of the screen) and enjoy(let me know if the link for some reason doesn't take you to a Seekers' recording session -I'm new and not too savvy at this stuff):

P.S. I left this on my computer tonight and left a card on the counter instructing my sweetheart to replay it and know that the words approximated what I've been thinking about her today -it was a good evening.

The Seekers were one of my favorite groups of the 60s, along with the New Christy Minstrels, and the Kingston Trio.

The flashback was somewhat surreal and I admit I chuckled when I saw the sound board. Nothing against folk music, the quartet was appealing, pleasing and it was refreshing to see the bass "fiddle" in action.

The end of the clip gives us a glimpse into the essence of 60's high tech as the two gents, inside the sound room, give one another the approval nod and the seated sound technician reaches over, stops the reel to reel having the take in the can.

Thanks for sharing. I have the urge to go to a coffee shop, but not starbucks...

Georgy Girl was the song I relate to from the radio...

Thanks for posting this! Brings back lots of memories. How about one of their most played songs: Georgy Girl

YouTube - The Seekers - Georgy Girl-1968

On the right hand side are lots of their other great songs.

One of my all time favorite Aussie bands several years later was The Little River Band: Get chills listening to this song. And so many more! Get the 4 disc collector set now from Time Life.....:D

I like just about everything The Seekers did except Georgy Girl. It was played so much that I got sick of it.
They also did a wonderful lullaby called Morningtown Ride which, unfortunately, has been pulled from You Tube. I'm gonna have to pull out the album and have a listen.

Ron,

It's still on YouTube; I saw at least three videos of it listed. You have to rummage a bit, but it's there.

What Andy said, I saw it, it's there.
I can't link from the work computer Ron, I'll do it when I get home, if no one else does first.

For a really clear example of Ms. Durham's extraordinary voice, listen to a piece(also listed on the right under 'Related Videos') entitled "All Over the World". It is more or less a solo piece -what a heavenly sound.

Glad you folks are enjoying these old songs as much as I have been.

I'll Never Find Another You sure brings back memories. The wife and I were then raising a fledgling family, and this was pretty much our song at the time. I just sent her an e-mail with this link; she'll enjoy it as much as I have, I know. Thanks for posting!

YouTube - Aussies In Afghanistan ~ I AM AUSTRALIAN SUNG BY THE SEEKERS

"I Am Australian", honoring Aussies in Afghanistan. I think this is the same Seekers. Didn't realize that they went back so far, but I didn't pay a lot of attention to singing groups then. I do recognize, "Georgy Girl" and others.

I'm sentimental about the Swedish group, ABBA, too.

My favorite Aussie singer may be Kylie Minogue. Here's a post that I made about her here awhile back. Just click on the links to hear her.
Quite the showgirl. http://smith-wessonforum.com/lounge/104174-anyone-like-kylie-minogue.html

And I loved Tina Arena in this, from a Zorro movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH5fZmjUo68&feature=related I didn't realize until fairly recently that she's Australian, of Italian descent.

There's another nice cut on the "related videos" in the box on the right. "You Were On My Mind" by We Five. I enjoyed it as well.
