The Cabela's in Tualatin, Oregon has for sale an excellent condition example with box and docs for $599. Pics on their website. I'm not buying right now or I'd be all over it.

That is tempting, I wonder if those are the original grips.
Have prices dropped on S&W revolvers ? When I was looking for a nice Model 14 several years ago one like you're describing would have been up near the $1000 mark .

Hard to tell although there does seem to be some softening of prices. This one is at Cabelas though and while they usually price things at 50% above retail occasionally they're 50% below. Not easy for me to understand their pricing strategy. Where I shop I'd expect that one to be priced around $800-$900.

This particular Cabela's has prices all over the place. They have one of the 5" 3-5-7 series 686+ revolvers, used, with a slightly challenged finish, for more than a new one in the case.
I just called the gun library and it is sold. The person I talked to said there were only two Smith's left out of a collection of maybe 30, a model 57 and a .357 I didn't ask about. I just had to call.

What would a no-dash 8-3/8" bbl, no box, go for these days? Model 14.
