A while back a friend of mine ask me a question I couldn't answer. He ask me how fast a bullet travels in miles per hour. I told him it's figured in feet per second. He said he under stood but was still curious.Is there a math wizard out there that could help me give him a answer? Let's say the bullet is traveling at 1300 fps.

Feet per second X 60 = feet per minute. Multiply by 60 for feet per hour. Divide by 5280 for the result in miles per hour.

Another interesting thing is the rotations per minute of a bullet after passing through a rifled barrel. One turn in 12" at 1300 FPS equals 1300 revolutions per second, times 60 equals 78000 revolutions per minute (roughly 50 times the RPM of a drill press). Multiplied by 60 this results in 4,680,000 revolutions per hour.

Velocity begins to drop as soon as the bullet begins passing through the atmosphere and is affected by gravity. Revolution of the bullet on its axis remains fairly constant, not nearly as affected by atmosphere or gravity.

A bullet fired straight up into the air will eventually stop due to atmospheric resistance and gravity, then fall straight down, returning to Earth while still rotating at about the same rate as when launched. While that falling bullet will have little kinetic energy resulting from velocity, it will retain significant energy from its rotational force.

Hey guys, I called my friend and told him how fast my .357 were in mph. We even figured out how fast his 9mm was travelling. And yes I told him you guys were responsible for the info. Thanks guys!!!

As the bullet's momentum drops to equal the force of gravity,
the bullet begins accelerating back to earth, at the rate of
32 fps/sec.

Falling bullets can, and have killed people.

The inertia of bullet rotation is miniscule, compared to the inertia of it's linear velocity.

That’s a close approximation.
.6818 will give more accurate results.
If you want an exact conversion, multiply fps x 15/22.


How many furlongs per fortnight would 1300 fps come to? :confused:
1 furlong = 220 yds = 660 ft
1 fortnight = 2 weeks = 336 hours = 1209600 seconds

1300ft/second x 1209600 seconds/1 fortnight x 1 furlong/660 ft = 2382545.455 furlongs/fortnight

Or, just multiply fps x 1832.7273
 
I Googled the question 1300 fps = mph

A conversion site popped up with 1300 fps = 886.36 mph !

I didn't even have to do the math...ain't the net wonderful !

I find it strange no one gave you an answer when google.com will do it for you and make you look like a math wizard ... I flunked every math course I ever took but I can search the net .
