So, just to make sure I understand. . . you took five S&W revolvers, all of which started with the excellent micrometer click adjustable rear sight and replaced them with fixed sights?

I sort of understand if it is for a combat revolver and you are willing to go through the headache of sighting in for your chosen carry load, but then again, if you were using it for defense you would have a ramp sight out front instead of a square back design on the front sight that will catch on a holster, clothing or whatever.

The work does look to be high quality, but I do not understand your reasoning here.

To each his own, however, and if you are happy, that is all that matters!

SIGHTS

The rear sights have elevation adjustable ONLY. If you need windage take a file to one or the other side of the U-notch. Most of the time if you need windage , your pulling the trigger when you shot. My son and I shot USPSA / IDPA and I set the sights and load up for each gun. We have no problem with the holsters we use. The quality of Scott's work is the BEST....... If you call him, he will help....

I use and like the SDM supersight front FO.

The rationale for replacing the S&W adjustable rear sights totally escapes me?!? The SDM FO front sight is more susceptible to damage than the S&W rear.

I shoot IDPA, USPSA, and ICORE revolver.

I'm looking for a fiber optic front sight for my 627. I want something that's encapsulated, like the Hi-Viz. The only problem is Hi-Viz doesn't make a flat top pinned sight for an N Frame (they're all round) and the ones from SDM are not encapsulated. I don't like the regular fiber optic front sights with the rods that keep falling out.

And I agree with the others in that I haven't found a need to change the adjustable rear sight on a S&W revolver. They serve all needs extremely well and I have not yet managed to break one.

Another prop for Scott at SDM. A couple of years ago he made me 2 custom gold bead front sights for my 3" 66 and 4" 617. The standard beads are too big for me to get a good notch and post picture and he used a smaller bead to my height specs. I won the idpa state match that year with that 66 and still use it in ICORE.

I have a SDM and several other FO front sights on various weapons that I shoot in competition. I always drill through the sight so I can just slip in a piece of FO and heat both ends to lock it in place.

I have never had one break or fall out, during hundreds of draws and reholstering or during shooting or dry fire drills.

I do carry extra FO and could install a new one in less than a minute.
I buy FO in bulk and always have plenty of extras in several colors.

One reason to change the factory rear sight is to get a bigger blacker rear sight.

I replaced mine a number of years ago with a Millett rear. It is big, tough and fully ajustable. I really like it, I like the sight picture better than the factory blade. Too bad they aren't making them anymore.

The SDM rear sight looks like a good one and elevation should be enough.

For my customization dollars I guess it would be someting I would consider. The Millett is listed in Brownells for about $58, but is now discontinued. The SDM is $75. The closest item to the Millett is the Bowen, adjustable for elevation and windage, it is $95.

The other option is a Weigand style rear blade for about $28 in Bownells. Gives the sight picture, but keeps the factory sight and mechanicals.

The SDM rear sight looks like a great mod. I have the SDM front sight. It is not a need sort of item, but would I want enough to pay $75, maybe, if I can't get a Millett.

Sorry that this is slightly off topic from the OP, but I get the impression from this thread that for IDPA it's ok to change the sights to something other than the stock ones that come on a particular gun as long as they're still open sights. Is that correct?
My next gun purchase is probably going to be a 4" revolver that will qualify for stock service revolver in a local PPC league and for IDPA SSR if I can find the time. I was figuring on putting a Weigand competition blade on the gun so that the sight picture would be similar to the sights on my PPC race gun.

The Weigan blade is fantastic. Gives a great sight picture and is totally adjustable. I do like the SDM FO front sights. Too bad they don't make one for my new V-Comp 627.

That's NOT a Weigan rear sight.... SDM makes that. The front sight is made by Williams Gun Sight Company.......part number is # 056435.

Not quite. "Sights may be changed to another conventional notch and post type." "Sights of non-standard configuration are NOT ALLOWED IN ANY DIVISION. (i.e., ghost rings, BoMar rib, etc."
