Are there any options for a more visable front sight on a Model 36 besides painting it ? How is the factory front sight installed on a non-pinned sight?

The M36 front sight is integral with the barrel, so it is non removable and non replaceable. Other than painting it, you could cut a notch in it and use red (or other colored) plastic inserts. I would however NOT recommend that on a J-frame since the front sight is so thin. It would more than likely fall out of the notch after a while. If you must have the front sight colored, I would use Testor's international orange colored paint. It lasts for a long time, is highly visible, and is easily removable if so desired.

mine has a tritium insert, I believe Trijicon put it in. Seems to me someone with the skills can put an insert in there, mine looks professional.

The one I saw (and maybe want) was a brass shotgun bead threaded into the barrel. Someone milled off the front sight, and threaded a hole, and this was the sight:

there's also this one:
I had this sight on a Makarov many years ago. Unfortunately I don't have pics of it on the gun, but it was very cool. You do have to occlude one side of it so it isn't visible from the front.
