I have a 21-4 with which I am very pleased. At age 56 I am having some problems seeing the plain black front/rear sight. A bit of white fingernail polish has made it easier for me to see the sights. I would like to try something else.

The front sight on a 21-4 is retained by a roll pin. Is there any manufacturer who offered replacement front sights for the 21-4? I've looked at some revolvers that have the fiber optic type front sights. I think such an arrangement would be idea for my purposes. If someone makes a tritium night sight for the front sight that would be wonderful. Is any such front sight available? Thanks sincerely. brucev.

Label me as "geezer eyes" too....and I had to dispose of my marvelous 21-4 because of the same sight reason....plus a buddy made me an offer I couldn't refuse....

BUT.....

check out "LPA" sights on the google. Precision in CT has front/rear fiber optic sets and they do wonders. I've used one on a 610 for several years and have NO complaints!

I have found the following items that may very well suffice to meet my need for a more easily seen/used front sight.

One is a McGivern-Style Gold Bead by SDM. Brownells list a .250 and .300 height available. S&W REVOLVER GOLD BEAD FRONT SIGHT | Brownells

The other option founds is a fiber-optic front sight by EGW. Brownells list this as .295. S&W Fiber Optic Sight : SMITH & WESSON REVOLVER FIBER OPTIC FRONT SIGHT | Brownells

In response to a inquiry one of our board member, TAROMAN, suggested a fiber-optic front sight by Dawson Precision. Dawson has heights of .170, .230, .280 are available. www.dawsonprecision.com SIGHTS FRONT:Smith and Wesson Revolver, Pinned Front Sight:Smith and Wesson Revolver, Pinned Fiber Optic Inserted Front Sights Category

My revolver has the standard height sight as installed by S&W. At 7 and 15 yds. POA is POI w/ 240 gr. Winchester Cowboy Action ammunition. With 200 gr. Gold Dots it hits POA at 7 yds. I've not been able to shoot it enough w/ the Gold Dots at long distances as the factory loads are simply to expensive for target practice.

I have a tape measure but it is only marked in 1/16" graduations. I figure if I can determine the height of the current front sight, I can then order a similar height replacement sight. Does anyone know what is the height of the front sight on a 21-4? Does anyone have experience installing these pinned type sights? Is this something that can be done by one with basic skill using tools or is this something that requires the attention of a gunsmith? Thanks. brucev.

SDM Gold

I have put a set of SDM gold sights on my 617,625, & 1911.

In normal daylight I sometimes almost have to ignore the front sight. I know that my seem stupid but I couldn't be happier. These sights capture a lot of light. Kinda like a light house beacon up there to me. :) Even in late afternoon and indoors they still work great for me.

Before hand for a little experiment I bought one of the gold pens at Walmart and touched up the front sights that were on the pistols. Made a helluva difference for me.

Called SDM just happened to catch him at the right time for a small discussion.

I did the 625 but had my smith do the 617 & 1911.

I'm your age and legally blind without my glasses. What does this mean? Well, I cannot even see the "E" on the top row of the eye chart without my glasses. I have the same problems seeing the front sight and have gone to the fiber optic front sight when possible. I also use laser sights and/or red dot sights when the situation allows. I have a set of Tru-glo sights on my M&P 40c that I really like. These sights combine fiber optics with tritium - making them night sights - resulting in a good set up for a variety of light situations.

Best of luck,

Dave
