A guy that knew very little about guns and built an entrenching tool for the military, came up with one of the great designs in history with the G17. But what is much more impressive than that is how he overtook the law enforcement market with his business management formula. Create a design with manufacturing techniques that are cheaper than your competition, then spend that saved money on quality control. Then give your customers what they want, a package deal with guns, magazines, spare parts, armory training, and excellent customer service at a good price. That's how you blow away your competition. It's not that the Glock handgun is THAT much better than the other LE handguns.
