For those of you who buy on Gunbroker, how much tax do you pay? I live in Missouri and gb just started collecting tax this year. At first I thought they were just going to collect the Missouri state tax which is 4 something % but they dinged me for state, county, city, and local, about 10%.

It occurs to me that if I'm competing against bidders in states with zero state tax, I'm at a significant disadvantage.

Just a moment...

Note: Effective January 1, 2023 Missouri became the final sate with sales tax to require MPF Sales Tax collection. All states with sales tax now require MPF tax collection.

A friend who has moved 2-3 times within the same metro area, to different established municipal areas each move, has determined the zip code determines the tax rate (accurate or not) GB is going to collect. He has tried to advise GB of incorrect tax rates, but only crickets thus far.

In 2017, taxpayers lost a significant sales tax case in the US Supreme Court (Wayfair v South Dakota) which took the brakes off state and local taxation (particularly for remote sales). Even if you do not technically owe it, it is now more difficult to keep them from finding ways of confiscating it.

GB uses a contract company to collect the tax and if you have an unusual sale or no sale, such as a non-payment, you still pay the tax. There is no refund but you will get a credit on your account. Dealing with GB is useless because they pass any and all complaints to the tax collecting contractor. We see many complaints about GB, but they are not sellers of anything - just the facilitator that provides the ability for a seller to find a buyer.

Yep. You're correct.

If I shop on GB, I factor in all the taxes, shipping, miscellaneous charges as well as the transfer fee at my local FFL, for a total estimate before placing my max bid. A bid is placed only when a similar item can't be obtained locally for less.

The states with no sales tax are Alaska, Delaware, Montana
New Hampshire and Oregon.

All the rest have sales taxes at some rate. That's what you get
charged along with GB's 1% up charge and shipping if the seller
doesn't cover it.. With only 9 storefronts that sell firearms within
100 miles of me it's a wash between the cost of fuel and their
other costs. And I get a much better selection.

I have bought several items on GB including one just in the last week. These days I only consider buying if it is a very good price so that with all the fees it is still a deal or a difficult to find or unusual item.
That all said their compliance fee IMO is BS. I hope to never want to buy another item there.
Selling and wanting my bank account info is ridiculous and I am not playing that game.

We pay sales tax in this state, but no state income tax. They get you one way or another. When Gun Broker collects sales tax, I don't pay tax at the local FFL. If a vendor doesn't collect sales tax, like Sig Sauer didn't on a pistol I bought, then the local FFL charges tax. And then, if I'm not charged tax by an online non-FFL vendor, I'm supposed to remit use tax to the state. Yeah right, like anybody does that? Like I said, they get you one way or another.

On average, sales tax on an auction item plus on the shipping cost (?!) and fees put an extra 15% cost on purchases. It makes a reasonably priced item expensive and a "bargain" less so.

Still a relative "bargain" compared to RIA where I add 27% to the hammer price and another 1% if you bid on line. So why buy there? Because on a weekend they sell several thousand firearms which always include some hard to find rare and unique pieces. If we waited for those items to turn up in our local shops we'd never find most of them. Expensive, yes. Too expensive? Depends how badly we want an item and how much we think it is really worth.

Just curious, what % sales tax do you pay?
