I'm wondering how far in advance people usually know a company like S&W is making a certain item.
With the auto industry, you have concept cars to show new technology, you have auto shows where things are shown off to generate hype even if the actual product never gets produced, and you have people in the industry dropping hints all the time. You have links on their websites showing future products, you have enthusiasts taking pictures of these items out in the wild.
I know a lot of this doesn't apply to the weapons industry, but generally how far in advance do you know a certain gun is being made? How soon after it shows up at the SHOT Show will it hit dealers?
The reason for this question is, hypothetically, I'd hate to but a gun from one manufacturer just to have a better one come out of a better manufacturer later. For example, I'm a big advocate of S&W making a tactical shotgun. I don't want it just because S&W would make it, but because I need a really good home defense shotgun. Now S&W doesn't offer one, but Mossburg does, Remington does, etc. I'm worried I'll get a Mossburg or Remington just to have one come from S&W next month, you know?
I had no idea there would be an M&P15-22 coming out. When were they first announced? What should I be looking for to get reliable info about products in the works? Because unlike many other industries (cars, computers, MP3 players, even shoes), it doesn't seem like gunmakers really generate much hype before a product hits.
