My daughter and my nephew's wife applied for a GWL at the Probate Court Tuesday after lunch. They filled out the forms, and went across the street to the SO to be fingerprinted. The process took less than an hour for the two of them. They both received their permits in this afternoon's mail.

We don't like to leave law-abiding citizens defenseless in rural GA, especially our women-folks, so our elected officials have their priorities straight about what business to get done.;)

I happen to know that our Probate Judge has given her husband Colt Single Action Army revolvers for Christmas on at least two occasions. She gets my vote.

Grats redlevel, it does vary depending on which county you are in, here in Rockdale it's about 7 days. Our Probate Judge is very efficient, this does include the mental health check that many counties do not do.

Bob, the Georgia Weapon License (GWL) is the equivilent of what many states call CCP/CCL, etc. There is a longer explination since this license just became a GWL some 7 months ago, previously it was know as a Georgia Firearms License (GFL).

Cheers,
Sam

Just what is a weapons license?

GA issues a Georgia Weapons License or GWL....it allows for the carry of a gun and a knife over 5 inches openly or concealed. GA is a non traditional Open Carry state so to OC you must have the license unless you're exempt like a policemen, or a member of the Georgia or US military(they have no off limits places just like a cop 16-11-130.3) and other people like judges, clerks of some courts etc

GeorgiaCarry.Org is Georgia's no-compromise voice for gun owners.

GCO believes that citizens of Georgia and the United States have the right to own and carry the firearm of their choice for any reason other than to commit a crime. GCO works tirelessly to ensure that the rights of gun owners are not compromised by the Georgia General Assembly and local officials.

Some notable accomplishments to date include: Georgia Appeals Court ruling affirming GCO's position that Probate courts shall issue a GFL in 60 days; US Court of Appeals ruling affirming GCO's position that SSN and employer information are not required for a GFL application; Georgia Court of Appeals ruling affirming GCO's position that local ordinances may not bar GFL holders from carrying in parks. You can read all about current actions and the history behind our past actions under Categories in the right-hand column.

I have been a member of GCO since 2007. I seriously considered not renewing my membership this year because of some of the virulent anti-NRA positions of many members and some of the leadership. Finally, I decided to apply the same logic to my GCO membership as I do my NRA membership: even though the organization isn't perfect, and I disagree with some of the things they do and stances they take, the good they do far outweighs the bad.

I get tickled when an organization involving itself in the legislative process touts itself as a "no compromise" group when the process itself is all about compromise and a meeting of minds. Keep in mind, there is only one kind of government I know of that doesn't involve compromise, and that is a dictatorship.

I do appreciate what GCO has done in its short existence. I just wish they would lose the idea that they can benefit from a "David v. Goliath" conflict with NRA.

rmodel1965, are you a member of NRA?

Yes i am as well as a member of the Second Amendment Foundation(who has won Heller v DC and the McDonald v Chicago cases)....i was very displeased at the NRA's attempts at fighting a pro-gun bill for no reason...the bill repealed the 140 year old racist public gather clause out of GA law...but i am still a member of the NRA
