The NBC Today Show elitists are railng again today at supermodel Gisele Bundchen, wife of football player Tom Brady.

Now, I don't follow football, and I barely know who Brady is. I guess he's the quarterback of the team that lost the Superbowl. I know the Giants won that. I did know that he married Bundchen a few years ago. I guess I'm kind of a model groupie, or see them a lot in the news, etc. I have a few favorites, Gisele Bundchen not really among them.

But the Brazilian beauty is being skewered by NBC and some football fans for standing up for her man. I don't like it.

The deal seems to be that a heckler said something bad to Gisele about Brady, and she said, "Well, Tommy can't throw the (bleeping) ball and catch it, too." She included an expletive banned on this board, but it wasn't unlikely, given the way she was being hassled at a stressful moment. (Mrs. Brady speaks fluent English, BTW, and is probably familiar with US customs and speech at the celebrity level.)

Why is it such a big deal that she stood up for her husband and was seen comforting him with a hug? Wives should do that! She also got dumped on for drinking red wine during the game instead of beer!

Is this really such a big offense to Brady's team mates who dropped the ball? I didn't watch the game; have no idea who she meant.

Is the "awful" thing that she embarrassed those men, who probably already felt bad about not winning? People who fail in other endeavors are criticized for it, and I've heard sportscasters speak ill of some players who lost games, or otherwise embarrassed their teams in public with their drug problems, etc.

How do you feel? Shouldn't she stand up for her husband? Or, has she really committed some terrible social gaffe among sports fans?

If Tom Brady gets fired, they can get by without food stamps. Last time I read an article on models' incomes in, "Forbes", Gisele was making about $11 million a year in US funds. (I'm sure that the male Brady makes a lot more, but one can get by on that. :D )

Really, some of the comments from the newswomen were just plain catty. I think they're jealous of Gisele because she is a top model and because she married a guy like Brady. The male commentators seem to think some sports offense has occured.

Can anyone explain why this should be getting at least two days of intense comment on a major morning news show? And on the evening entertainment shows? Gad, one news witch even criticized her for calling her husband, "Tommy."

I think it's pretty cool that they seem in love and are supportive of one another. The world needs more of that.

We (wife and I) also are not sports fans. Before Monday, I could not have told you who was playing, much less the quarterbacks.

Evidently, as she was leaving, some jerk made a rude (but not foul) remark to her. She got P.O.'d and walked over to him but her bodyguard/security intervened. So she made her remark in the context that 3 passes were fumbled=I guess any one could have won the game. Basically, her husband did his job and his team-mates dropped the ball (pun intended). At least, as I understand it from the media reports.

I have and will again, defend my wife under only slightly similar circumstances and she has stuck up for me. I would expect the same from any spouse. I respect her and applaud her efforts to "stand by her man". We should all be so lucky.

Forget the media==they just want to sell papers/time/airspace.

There is an unspoken rule in pro sports, you don't single out teammates for mistakes. Even though I believe, as you said, she was defending her husband, she shouldn't have said it. But the media attack on her is unwarranted. Why aren't they blasting the jerk that would heckle a players wife?

Just typical BS that the media thrives on - controversy....
I see it as sour grapes on the part of Mrs. Brady, she should have just given the heckler "the finger" which is now considered more acceptable.

The media gets paid to talk, and they got to talk about something.

In a hundred years no one will care, happens much sooner for some - I don't care today.

She is harassed by one of the worst fans anyone could encounter (New York):D, lots of them here at the forum. Her response was nothing but the truth, we had butterfingers that day.

Really, going after a players wife?

Star,

I'm not a thoroughly savvy NFL fan, but I do watch a few playoff games, a number of college games, and played high school football and understand something of the dynamics of it.

Team unity is extremely important. A team's performance on the field can suffer significant adverse effects by any public criticism of one or more of the members by one or more of the other members, or by public criticism of the coaches by the players, etc.

Criticism by players' wives is probably not as damaging, but still may cause tension between Mr. Brady and the receivers who made the mistakes. Since this is the end of the season, any rift can probably can be healed before the next season begins. If this happened during the season, it could conceivably have resulted in a loss or two, who knows?

I agree with you, however, that the media's reaction is excessive drivel. Others have commented well on this.

I have mixed feelings re: Ms. Bundchen's words. I agree with you on the one hand that a wife's defense of her husband is quite admirable. Her response also was understandable given the provocation. On the other hand, in my view a more mature woman would have ignored the juvenile outburst of an insensitive fan and thus prevented the whole flap.

Just my thoughts, without giving it a lot of thought.

Regards,
Andy

Bottom line is you win as a team and you lose as a team. Left out of the conversation is that some of the dropped balls were indeed bad throws by Tom. Oh and btw, I can tell you from experience, the NY fans are not the worst, that title goes to Philly and Boston. With an exception for Yankee fans that is.

I dislike the whole cheating Belichek-Brady enterprise, but you leave family out of it. She should not have been subjected to that and her response is irrelevant. Too much is made of sports contests, IMHO.

"Mrs. Brady" is every bit as much a celebrity as her husband, and is subject to the media hassle that any other celeb endures. She doesn't get a pass because she's married. She's no Suzie Homemaker.

As far as the comments: wifey doesn't get to talk publicly about hubby's job. Especially sports. What it Tommy was talking about how fat the other super models were, compared to Gisele? THAT would get interesting!

Good for her............I'd expect nothing less from a loving wife under the circumstances.

Anyone the media takes a dislike to is usually a good soul, in my experience.

Giselle sounds like all the loser Pat fans :p.....if....if.....but...shoulda......coulda.....woulda....the lights were in my eyes....the moon was overhead..... the grass was soggy.......the refs cheated..... the cat ate the mail.....
And what was so great about the throw, it was 2 feet behind him and 2 feet over his head, isn't the QB supposed to hit a receiver "in the numbers"?

Saw Donald Trump comment on this on Entertainment Tonight. He said that he's a friend of the Bradys, and fully supported what Gisele said.

BTW, I saw her a few years ago on some talk show, Letterman, I think. She mentioned that in Brazilian Portuguese, her name is pronounced as Jizz- ZEL-ee. Not the French Gisele, which she is called here because most don't know that. And she may think the usual pronunciation plays better in her international career.

For what it's worth, I'd rather look at her fellow countrywomen Ana Beatriz Barros and Alessandra Ambrosio. (See YouTube videos of each if you can't place them.) They seem more laid back and happy, too. But I gotta admire her for her open admiration and support for her guy.

Yeah, that gets it in context. She probably just thought it was a personal attack, and being who she is, it lit her fuse.

As far as the model thinness issue goes, all that I've seen from them was when Doutzen Kroes worried that she might be a little too voluptuous (she's really about right, and could maybe even gain a few pounds if she was in another business) and from the wonderful humanitarian Petra Nemcova, who has openly spoken out against the designers requiring excessive slimness. That cost her a couple of friends' lives and makes the girls often look unnatural and unhealthy. Petra has been very courageous about this issue, as well as building orphanages and schools in Thailand, where she so nearly lost her life (did lose her fiance) in the terrible tsunami about 2004 or 2005. Doctors said that her remarkable recovery from very grevious injuries was literally a miracle. One doc said that he didn't heal the famous Czech model. That was done by God. Having read the list of her injuries, I believe that. Perhaps she was healed to do her humanitarian work as well as her TV show, which helps aspiring models to break into the business.

One might think that the top models might be witches, catty and critical. But those I've heard comment on one another were kind and friendly, even admiring. These are the Vicky's Secret Angels, evidently a pretty tight group. (Gisele is no longer working there.)

Of course, they have their temperamental examples, too, like one who threw a 'phone at her maid. A few others have also been as witchy as if they wore pointed hats and rode brooms. But many seem really nice, and some have a wry sense of humor that makes them fun on talk shows.

I guess that Gisele now understands the need for discretion re comments on Tom's team mates. I wonder how Brazilian wives react to their men who play futbol (soccer) if a fan disses their husbands? That's a big sport down there.

I once saw some Brazilian players here, and they were really good. They wound up sitting near me in a restaurant, but I have no idea what they were saying, not knowing Portguese. But they seemed like a happy bunch of guys, a little intense at times over some issues.

Oh, well: I guess we've about covered the matter. I was glad to hear The Donald supporting her.

Who cares what she says. Let's all be honest here Brady was going to be a winner on Sunday no matter the outcome of the game.

Do I blame the lady for being upset? Not in the least, IMHO she did violate two cardinal rules though, one you don’t air your dirty laundry in public, and two she used a very crude, no matter who uses, word. The woman has been around long enough and has enough public contact she should have known better. Hopefully this will reach the non-event status it deserves in a day or two.
