I know nothing about any Glock. That said a friend asked me how to mount a red dot on his Glock 27. Is this possible and if so how do you do it? TIA

There are a couple of ways. The first is to have the slide machined to accept the mounting plate for the specific optic required. The second is to purchase a mount that affixes to the rear sight dovetail, dovetail + backplate, or frame pins.

A web search for “red dot mount glock” will reveal a dizzying array of options.

As much as I like RDS due to my aging eyes, I think that platform is not a good one for an RDS. (I have and carry a 33, so I am familiar with it.) The beauty of that platform (FOR ME) is that I can pocket carry it in a good holster (mine is Kramer, and I have had it for ... 20+ years). Looking as if I am unarmed yet able to stand with my hand in the pocket ready to draw has real benefit to me. An RDS would ruin that aspect.
There are shops that do good work, so it is doable - just not something I value. I have an RDS equipped PC Shield and a G17 with an Acro - like 'em, but different purposes than the smaller Glock.

I'm not a fan of the dovetail mounts. They put the dot up higher than it should be, and I don't think I would trust their longevity.

So, that basically leaves milling the existing slide to accept a mount, or buying a replacement aftermarket slide already cut for the optic. Cost wise, the optics cut is likely going to be cheaper than the new slide.
