Hey Colt fans...

I have a Series 80 GCNM (blued) that came with rubber wrap-around grips, that leaves the backstrap exposed. Not uncomfortable, but maybe not the "traditional" look I'm used to.
Any suggestions on a "classic" look replacement, and where to get them?
Googling "1911 grips" takes me to places I didn't know existed...

I prefer the OEM wood grips that came on the Gold Cup's. Place a WTB ad in our classifieds or watch ebay. They're not hard to find.

Yes the rubber grips were probably stock if they have the Colt medallions in them.

Many manufacturers were shipping rubber grips with their firearms back in those days

While expensive these days, I am fond of the look of the Blue steel and Ivory look for Gold Cups. There are also lots of nice wood choices available in addition to walnut. The double diamond checkering pattern was one of the last used on Cold 1911s. The full checkered pattern was used into the 60s I believe. The Factory even went to smooth grips for some of the more limited runs

s&wchad, nice scratched up Gold Cup

It's been a long time since I bought any, but look at CDNNs website. Years ago they had a good selection with good prices. I don't know if they even sell them nowadays.

Great looking pistols!

colt_saa, love the look of that commander. I'm green with envy.

I knew there were a lot of options. Trying to strike a balance between looks and functionality.

If you’re planning to actually use the GC for target shooting, unattractive as the rubber grips may be, they’re probably the best for controlling the gun, since Colt didn’t see fit to checker the front strap. I do believe they most likely were original to your Series 80 gun. My Series 70 gun came with stocks like S&WChad shows, but when I used the gun for informal target shooting, I replaced them with Pachmayr grips, which were much better for me. I no longer participate in that, but the Pachmayrs are still on the gun.

You can find the tradional walnut grips on eBay at times, other than that there are loads of nice grips available from different makers

That is Colt Custom Shop Ivory on the blue Commander. My 5" Gold Cup Trophy also has Ivory

Here is the Kimber Centennial 1911 for the 100th anniversary of JMB's pistol. The Ivory Kimber chose is somewhat plain but I think it will age well, I just wish they had sprung a few bucks for medallions. I think it would have been a nice touch

On the basis of non-Factory options, here are a few more.

Ahernds Tacticals are on my Springfield 45 SUPER. I think the wood was Coco Bolo but there are lots of choices

THOR is wearing a set that Esmarelda O'keefe scrimshawed several years back. She has LOTS of interesting checkering and scrimshaw patterns on her website and her work is very reasonable.

Because of what Obama did to the price of Ivory. The 38 SUPER long slide that I am working on right now will be getting these Wooly Mammoth grips. They are somewhere between 12 and 15 thousand years old. As soon as I saw them I knew they were what I wanted.

Truckman,
I have a stunning set of Giraffe with Colt Medallions just waiting for me to buy a pistol for them :) I just do not appear to have a photo

Yes, I will sometimes buy the grips first if something exceptional comes along

I would just take a scissor and cut the front that wraps around the frame for an immediate or temporary solution if you want wood grips at some point.

As they say, YMMV.

Heck I even have a couple sets of GC grips. My Wilson had cocobolo but replaced with pachys. No longer have a non military Colt...oh that's wrong. I have a series 70_but in the vault back east

My favorite pair of bark ivories are on this .45 National Match

56 year old French Holly on a Colt Commemorative 1911--it has started to yellow nicely

On a bone-stock 70 or 80 Series Colt I prefer the original checkered walnut grips with gold medallions

I have found that if the mainspring housing is VERY sharply checkered I can get a very secure, no-slip grip with the sharply checkered OEM walnut grips. The MSH can be easily replaced with the original, should one desire to do so, but of course if the front strap is checkered there's no going back to the original configuration.

I am on my 2nd set of Pachmayrs on my 70 Series GC. They have given me the best grip for the past 40 years.
