I'm in the process of buying a 19-4 official S&W commemorative revolver with gold-filled engraving on the side plate and right side of the barrel. Does anyone know if it is paint, gold leaf, or electroplating? How careful do I have to be with CLP products around it? Can I wipe the area down with Break-Free or Ballistol without harming the engraving? If I wanted to remove it entirely, how would I do it? Thanks.

Birchwood-Casey has made it for years in both silver and gold. If you want to remove it, use acetone and a toothbrush. That will not hurt the finish of the gun at all.

I had a 125th Anniversary Model whatever, and much to my dismay found the "gold" was removed more or less instantaneously by Hoppes #9 during what I admittedly thought of as a routine wipe and polish exercise----clearly my mistake, as I would never think of casting any aspersions on any perhaps well meaning mental midgets who used whatever inappropriate substance they may have used------either in the selection of the gold----or the formulation of the Hoppes.

I am (much) older now, and somewhat wiser, and wouldn't carry any sort of commemorative home with me if you gave it to me.(!!)

I've got a 19-4 from the early 80's I guess. Pennsylvania State Police anniversary. I have to hold the gun at just the right angle to be able to notice that at one time the rollmarks apparently were "gold" filled.

Rather they came from the factory that way, or someone else did a "do it yourself" job, I don't know.

I do remember seeing those Bonanza kits all over years ago.

Here's a Texas Ranger Commemorative 19-3 I used to have. I got it gun only. The gold fill had pretty much disintegrated so I had my local smith redo it when I had him give a good deep cleaning. I think it just looked right. Now lives with a friend of mine. Had the nicest factory trigger of any Smith I've owned in 40+ years.

I got a Bonanza Kit and have tried to re-do the gold fill on one of my guns without much luck. I followed the directions (even watching a how to do video on YouTube), but I think maybe the engraving is deeper on some guns than others. Every time I tried to re-do it, I would just wipe off most of what I had just put on. After getting frustrated, I haven't tried again.:(

I guess if you've wiped the gold out of the roll marks, you may as well just shoot and enjoy a still very nice gun.

I'd not want a gun that didn't have the fill easily removable.

That's an awesome set up! My old one still gets shot on a regular basis, I get to run some rounds through it as well when my buddy and I meet at the range. Damn accurate revolver. The fill is holding up just fine, gun looks the same.
