One of my local shops has a deal going on the M&P 9mm or .40, your choice for $425. I have a shield 9mm but have wanted the full size M&P for a long time. I don't really NEED another gun right now, but I really would love to have one. I can afford to do it, just don't know that it's necessary. Same shop is also offering Sig P229 .40 for $499, that's a used LEO weapon. I'm thinking about that over the M&P, but something tells me the M&P is better.

Anyway, is this such a good deal I should go for it? Also, I'm retired military and I think I could get a $50 rebate on it from Smith and Wesson, that's sounding even sweeter.

Check what CDNN is selling the M&Ps for...I think it's $399, so $425 retail is good (great with a rebate). If you go .40, I'd do think the SIG (with it's extra weight and hopefully the DAK trigger) is great, even though that's probably the only SIG I've ever liked. But then I'm more into polymer and KISS.
For a 9, I'd go MP...just because I think they're great values.
Why do you want the gun? HD? Target? $425 will buy a lot of practice or can go to some nice work on a gun (or both).

The gun would be used for target shooting and home defense. I got the Shield for CC, but would like something with a few more rounds in it for around the house. I have a Beretta 96 .40 cal currently filling that role but I don't like the really heavy DAO trigger pull. I'm looking to stick with the .40 cal for stopping power in a reasonably priced round so target shooting is less expensive also.

If your LE/MIL you can pick up M&P NIB for $398 with standard sights, and $455 with night sights. Do a search for S&W LE distributors in your area.

Need and want are two different animals. If you don't reload, the 9mm makes a lot of sense from a cost standpoint. I have a Shield and a West German Sig 226. The Sig is a proven gun that arms many of the best trained military and police forces worldwide. Overall weight is not an issue and the Sig will carry a 18 rd. Mec-Gar magazine in 9mm. With that much ammo, stopping power may be a moot point. Personally, the Sig will be the last semi auto I will part with.

I picked up one of the M&P 9C from Larry's yesterday. It is a good price, a bit higher than CDNN (I think CDNN only has 357 sig left and price is a wash after shipping/transfer).

This makes my 2nd M&P. Both have been excellent shooters right out the box. At the price it is competing with the Ruger SR, Sig 250, and Taurus pistols. All of which are IMO not as nice for one reason or another.

Budspolicesupply sells NIB M&P's for $399 every day. This is the S&W LE/Military discount.

But that's not all.... They have free shipping. ;)

But that's not all.... You get a third magazine free. ;)

Well with the m&p 40 you can always pick up a 9mm barrel under $70 I think. I own both sig and m&p can't go wrong. The 229 is a real nice gun, handle both. My sig just handles and shoots better for me.

I was in Larry's yesterday too. They were pretty busy, I looked at the M&P but not the Sig. I may head back today or tomorrow to check out the Sig and see if I should bring one home.

M&P's marked for LE/MIL all come with 3

The only reason I would turn down the Sig is the DA/SA. I would rather have a gun that is DA only or SA only. I paid $500 for my M&P9 FS. If you can get one for $425 and get the $50 rebate it is hard to see how you'd lose.

Get the M&P40, and you can drop in a 9mm barrel, or a .357Sig barrel, for other options.

You cannot up convert the M&P9.

The $50 rebate would also be great!

Nice! I'll check that out. I am leaning towards the M&P because I like that the trigger pull is the same first round and last. I have night sights on my Baretta and I like that, would like to have that option.

So I went to the LGS today and checked out the Sig 229 and the M&P .40. Didn't intend to buy anything, just look and pick up some ammo. While walking around I came across a Colt M4 22LR for $350...I couldn't just leave it there, so I brought it home. I'll pick up the M&P in another month or two.
