I have a friend who lives in the Harrisburg, PA area. She is not a shooter but, as she said, feels the need to assume more responsibility for her self-protection. She is the type of person, who although ignorant about firearms, is very intelligent, willing to learn and will practice. Unfortunately where she works is not conducive to asking questions and her family does not have a firearms tradition.

Being too far away to help personally, I would like to ask if anyone knows of a decent gunshop or club or range or school where she could start in the Harrisburg area. By decent I mean people who will talk with her and not down to her.

Thanks in advance.

There is a Bass Pro Shop in Harrisburg but I would suggest she look up Trop's Gun Shop in Elizabethtown. It's south on 283 towards Lancaster, and just off the exit, about 10 miles SE of Harrisburg. Have her Google it for directions. I belong to the Carlisle Pistol Club, located about 20 miles west. They do have regularly scheduled handgun classes for beginners and do not always require participants to be members. While I do not shoot in any leagues I do know that the club fields teams and goes to a number of other clubs in the area, Linglestown, Mechanicsburg to name a few. The are a lot of Sportsman clubs in the area too. Trop's would be a good place for her to inquire about finding a club/range closer to home.
