Does anyone have a favorite powder and load recipe for 30/30? I am in the process of rebuilding and refinishing a pre64 Winchester model 94 in 30/30 that was trashed. I need some load data because this is my first 30/30.

27.5 grains of Alliant Reloder 7 under 150 grain bullets is accurate and economical.

15.5 grains of Alliant 2400 under a 150 grain cast bullet is a terrific 1,730 fps plinker and target round.

I use H4895 for "standard" 30-30 loads. IIRC 34.0 grains is max for a 150gr bullet. I also use Hodgdon's LEVERevolution powder with Hornady's 160gr. bullets. I can't quite get that load up to max, because the gun does not have enough twist in the barrel. Bullets start to keyhole. Still... a pointy 160gr. bullet going about 2300fps from a lever gun. Whoa!!

I'm a fan of reduced loads....

Reduced loads are fun for me to shoot. I think they don't sell SR 4759 any more and I'm looking for a substitute for it. I don't have my data handy but I found this:

.30-30 Winchester - 150 grain FP bullet, 17.0 grains of SR 4759 powder, CCI 200 primer, Winchester case. COL 2.550". MV 1794 fps in 24" barrel. MAP 35,600 CUP. (Based on the Hodgdon Data Manual, 26th Edition.)

Also, 4895 powder can be reduced up to 30% of maximum load. it works great. Very versatile powder.

I use 28 gr. BLC2 with a pea size ball of Dacron for filler under a 180 gr. Lyman cast gas check bullet. Lots of offhand fun shooting at my iron coyote hanging at 100 yards! Probably don't really need the gas check.

32.5 gr IMR 4350 with a Speer 170 gr flat nose
IMO 4350 is way too slow a powder for use in the 30-30.

IME3031 was developed around the 30-30 and it still works well. 4895 is the "Unique" of rifle powders and also works well in the 30-30. Hodgdon came out with Leverevolution a few years back and I like that powder a lot. LVR is all I now use in the 30-30.

Of course there are other powders that will "work" but as reloaders we are always looking for the best performance.

If you want reduced loads..........
H4895 can be reduced by 60% from its maximum loading. ( not IMR4895 )

Not all ammo but most...........
Make sure to check with the powder company for the correct data.
My notes show a 130gr JFP at 2,006 fps and 27,000 cup in a 30/30.
Article states most loads will take deer out to 200 yards.

For what purpose will the load be?
Hunting large game, small game, plinking, cast bullet load of jacketed bullet load ? Plenty of "recipes" in the recipe books, just need to know what you would like to cook up a load for.

given the backstory provided, I'd assume the full large game variant out of the gate, as this represents the baseline of the cartridge.
we can play for versatility in a later chapter if and when the OP sees its brilliance

I plan on using a lead bullet for plinking/target practice. I need to find a decent bullet for deer hunting.
