Gordon Lightfoot

It would very difficult for me to pick one song of his that I like the best. Mom had many of his albums in the 60s/70s, considering him more a folk singer than any other genre. I have a 4 CD anthology set plus a few other CDs of his.

Some of my favorites (no particular order):
Did She Mention My Name
Canadian Railroad Trilogy
For Lovin' Me
Crossroads
Go-Go Round
Ribbon of Darkness
If You Could Read My Mind
Don Quixote
Alberta Bound
All the Lovely Ladies
Summertime Dream
The Circle is Small
Endless Wire
Race Among the Ruins
Sundown
Carefree Highway
Ballad of Yarmouth Castle

Been a Lightfoot fan for 50 years. A great songwriter. Later yeas his voice failed a bit. We had tix to see him in Jacksonville, but alas, he was ill and passed shortly thereafter. He wrote many song that were hits for others.

I met my wife the night she had gone to a Gordon Lightfoot concert, back in '76. Although never a fan myself, my wife was a dyed in the wool Gordo fan to the very end. She admired his craft with words, as a writer of poetry herself. I learned to also appreciate his writing, and he was a hell of story teller. We went to see him live on one occasion, he came out and right off the bat began telling a story about a guitar that his dear friend Harry Chapin had given him. It was always with him and this night it had gotten lost in the baggage, he was definitely in his cups. He sang a few old favorites but descended into a story telling episode that had us all rolling on the ground laughing. Ian and Silvia came up a number of times and anyone that knew Gordo knew that he often "slept" on the floor of their house, as did many Canadian musicians on the road. Once I started reading as well as listening to his songs I'd have to rate him as a first class balladeer, second to few for sheer volume of work.
My wife had exchanged letters with him over the years and he was always kind and respectful, thoughtful of her efforts at poetry.

He played the Opry House in Nashville in 1975 or 1976. A buddy of mine went to see him. Said he was SO drunk, he kept falling off the stool he was sitting on.

I went and saw him at The Orleans here in Vegas in the 2000s. The theater wasn't even half full. People pile on Taylor Swift for having a limited vocal range, but I didn't find his any greater. Maybe he had shifted keys on some of his stuff to match his ageing voice. Still like his songs.

I tried listening to the song, unfortunately the piano overwhelms the voice. Not unusual with rock bands but really detrimental here.
If you are referring to "Shadows," here is a remaster from 2002 that's acoustically a lot better: Bob Dylan’s favourite songs 2: Shadows – Untold Dylan

It's embedded in an article on Bob Dylan liking Lightfoot, regarding him as a mentor, and liking "Shadows" in particular.

A big fan of GL, which started as a kid with the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. He sure could make a 12 string sing.
