Got hit with the Dawn dish soap scam

Funny story. We live down a 1/4 mile drive, well off the road. Alarm on drive that detect any vehicles entering property. Closest neighbor is almost 1/2 mile. Several years ago, middle of winter. About 10" of snow on the ground, temp in the low teens. 2:30 am wife wakes me up "somebody's knocking on the door". Sure enough, I heard it to. Jumped up, threw on my robe and grabbed my .45. Went into the front hall. Flipped on the porch light. There stands our neighbor (single lady) in her robe and slippers! She let her car out on her deck and was trying to get it back in. Door closed, locking her thinly clad butt out😳. Poor girl walked all that way across the field through the snow and was about froze. We got her in and wife fixed her hot cocoa and thawed her out. Wound up getting a locksmith out about 5:30 am. Since then she keeps a key at our house and another hidden outside at her house🙄

My father was a door-to-door salesman and Watkins product distributor nearly all my life as a kid. We travelled all over the country before I started school, chasing one better pasture after the other, from Anchorage, Alaska to San Diego, California. He had his own janitorial chemical company when he finally hung up his spurs at sixty-nine, he died before he turned seventy. My wife has sold Mary Kay Cosmetics and won top titles in the business since the eighties. She still is going strong but the days of going to strangers' houses and doing a show are all over. Her car was broken into and over five thousand bucks of product stolen, we feel it was an inside job and that changed her method of doing business drastically, namely "If you have it, they will buy it."
I gave door to door sales a shot since Dad had the town sewed up when he was distributor. Dad warned me about women inviting me into the house, he got around and the one thing I will never forget while he was training me. I walked up to a door as he stood back and I saw a plaque on the door that said, "No Salesman Allowed." I told dad and turned around to leave. Dad said, "The reason that guy put the sign up is that his wife cannot say no, what is he going to do shoot you?"
Lately with all the scamming and issues like those mentioned by others regarding getting your house cased or worse once they gain entrance robbing you now no one is trusted anymore, not even the girl scout cookie girls. My wife will not answer the door unless she personally knows the person, I can appreciate that considering what she has been through. She was robbed at gunpoint when someone masquerading as a potential customer called to set up an appointment with her, once in pulled the gun. The other day I watched a couple of young guys come off the sidewalk and walk up my driveway, clean cut, looked like brothers. They rang the doorbell, I answered the door but talked through the screen. They were a couple of brothers and wanted to know if I needed the lawn mowed, or any other work done. I asked if they had a card, the older reached into his pocket and pulled out a card. I opened the door, accepted the card and told them that was smart to have the card. I also asked if they had a truck to haul stuff to the dump, yes they have a truck. I told them I would pass the word around and probably call them with some work.
