I apologize in advance for a long post, I tried to include a hoop of info for the data hounds. I picked up my 15-22 this morning at the SGK Gun Show in Doswell, VA. I had pre-arranged the deal since it was a threaded barrel model and it was convenient for dealer and buyer to wait until the show to do the transfer.
Here's the run down: MP15-22, SN DTU-53XX, red star on manual, page 9 does talk to ammunition - $435. Dealer stated he received it three weeks ago. There were other dealers selling threaded versions as low as $419 and as high as $465, but I had worked the deal with a good guy and honored the deal. Other SNs I observed at the show were DTU-53s, 55s, 57s and a 59. I also thought I saw "DTX" but don't hold me to that one. I picked up a few accessories at what I thought were good prices: 2x25rd mags ($19ea), MBUS flip up front ($50) and rear sights ($35), Knight's Armament front Tac grip ($35), Magpul XTM Rail panels ($8), a Tactical Inc fake can ($35) and an NC Star 4x32 optic with rings and tri-color reticle w/mil dots ($95). Funny story - I was dealing with one guy for several items and had done the math in my head at $145. I asked if he could do $135 for all and he says NO, but I can do $125. I said "okay" and didn't look back.
A picture out of the box:
First I took off the front and rear sights and put on the Macpul rails - FAIL. The pack said "8" and I thought 4 on each side would be enough but they are not since they snap together with each rail part requiring two pieces. Off to Quantico for different full sized rails.
Next was the install of the MBUIS flip up sights - easy to install but the front needed a hex key that was not supplied. I like these for this .22 since a set of YHMs would have been $199. Sights down:
Sights up:
Next was the Knight's Armament Tac Grip - again, an easy install, especially if you have M4orgeries.
Next was the NC Star - FAIL. I specifically asked for low profile mounts trying to eye the rear sight and mounts at the show - the low mount is just a tad too low so I had to remove the rear sight. Off to Quantico for the fix.
Here's a picture of the project at this stage. Not sure if I like the NCstar, it's nice, but I may want a reflex sight or something else - have to think about it a bit.
