I haven't touched one yet, so I can't say if I like it or not. I am going to a gun show tomorrow and hopefully will get to handle one. Right now I can't afford one, but I am interested in getting one at some point.........if only because I have been saying for years "If S&W made something like the Judge I would buy it" because I won't buy another Taurus.

I hope S&W follows suit with what Taurus did and offers a 6" version of the Governor.

It seems like it would be ideal for snakes and other small critters......raccoons, rats, etc. Light bird shot would be good for this.

You can also shoot .45 ACP through it but I doubt it would be very accurate.

Welcome!

I've never liked the Judge, in part because it's a Taurus in part because it tries to be too many things and doesn't do any of them well. But I must admit that I am drawn to the Governor. I like the allow frame, that it will chamber .45 acps, and that it's a S&W. So....as soon as they are actually available (they are not yet) I plan to pick one up just for the fun of it.

But in terms of home defense, I'm not entirely sure this is the best choice. The wider pattern of buckshot is attractive but it also increases the risk of collateral damage, and if you catch an attacker with just a pellet or two you're not likely stop him. If you like a shotgun for HD, I'd recommend a short barrel 12 ga.

If you plan to use either .45s for SD, then I think you'll find a 625 a better choice - more accurate, better handling, less recoil (not a light-weight allow frame).

That said, the Governor will do a fine job for HD as will essentially any gun you are competent with. And, I think, will be a fun range gun. I also think that the Governor is a huge step up from the Judge for a modest add'l cost. I just wish they'd not used that name!

Welcome to the forum.

I think many people consider this model a triumph of marketing over practicality, but the fact that it shoots .410 shot shells, .45 colt and .45 ACP or auto rim interchangeably makes it a clever design.

This gun would never have come to production if Taurus hadn't had some popular success with its Judge model. I suspect the Governor is a better made gun, but I don't know how big the market is. S&W will sell a few, but the gun may go out of production fairly quickly because the market for it seems limited to coolseekers and guys who may encounter both rattlesnakes and wolves on the same hike.

I wouldn't mind having one, but I wouldn't be ferociously disappointed if I never got around to buying one while they are available.

Thanks, I just seen another thread on this. I guess first thread eagerness got me. I keep j frame and SIG 220 for home defense. Yes, I still love the wheel guns. Ran ninto another venomis snake this afternoon, but I would prefer to wait on S&W. 3 inch wold be preferable. Thanks for posting.

Yes, I too would expect the Govenor to be a better made weapon. I am not concerned about shooting 45 from it, again carrying a light weight 410 pistol has ity advantages for me in the woods and water. Thanks for posting
