Grandson’s First Elk Hunt

Grandson Jack turned 12 this year so he’s now legal to hunt big game. He got a little 308 Win. rifle this summer and has been practicing for his first season - he’s been itchin’ to hunt elk. His Dad took him out yesterday morning. They got on this guy shortly after sunup, stalked him for about a mile and, one shot later, Jack had his first elk. Not bad for a 12 year old kid! I know guys who’ve hunted elk their whole lives and never got one like this!

I guided elk hunters for 9 years and have hunted elk long enough to accumulate 38 myself. No client and certainly not I have ever shot as nice an elk as this. Congratulations.

He should stop hunting now. After this it can only go down hill. My son had a dream season when he was 16. Hasn’t come close to it in last 13 seasons.

I think we're going to do a European mount. Their house isn't big enough to hold a full shoulder mount.

Shoulder mounts are just too big unless you have a huge room. I put one in my small office and the room was overwhelmed right away. Guess that's why it wound up on a wall in my garage.
