Was playing around last night and loaded up 50 rounds of misc 9mm brass with Magtech 115fmj bullets using 3.4 of Clays. Shot it this morning, extremely light recoil, very clean and dead on accurate at 7 and 15 yards. Shot it out of my 25 year old Ruger P85 which is a real tank and my 9mm test gun for reloads. This gun can be picky about ammo but loved this load. Plan on putting a box thru my P99 tomorrow.

TJ,

what manual did you use for this load?

I plan to do some testing after the summer for accurate 50 yd loads and want to try a less smokey powder than 231 or Bullseye.

I have a pound of Clays and have always read about its clean burning attributes.

I plan to use either a 124 or 147 slug for 50.

thanks in advance

Very fast burning powders such asClays and American Selct are indeed clean burning but certainlyless than ideal forhigh pressure cartridges such as 9mmand 40 S&W. Forfull powwer loads in such cartridges a powder such as WSF is much more aoppropriate and doesburn clean at the higher pressures. The fast burning powders such as Clays and Anerican Selct provideclean burning at lower pressures and are better suited to mild loads in cartridges such as 45 ACP.

it may not be the 231 pwd. thats smoking it might be the bullet. if you are useing cast bullets that are lubed the lube is what is smoking. i use 231 in 9mm,40/ and 45 and i buy my bllets from www.precisionbullets.com they are moly coated and the coating won't break down until 2000fps, that out to be good enough.they have a article on thair website check it out. prices are good to. don

Hawkeye,

I had some for 45 acp and I dont recall the performance.

I may try those 9mm in the heavier slugs.

thanks

Mike, I found it on Handloads.com. They suggest a 3.6 load of Clays but I dropped it to 3.4 and as I said it felt like a 22 and was very accurate. Bullet was a Magtech 115 fmj and I was using old cases of various make.

Added: I also put a box of 50 thru my P99 but upped the powder load to 3.5. Cycled without any issues and again a nice soft shooting load with great accuracy. I just bought three pounds of WW Autocomp which should be excellent for longer distance shooting. Not much load data available yet but there is some basic data available. I'm going to use some today and will report back next week when I have a chance to shoot it.

I've used Clays with 122gr LTC bullets, 2.8/3.0grs for 937/992fps. I've since switched to 4.0grs Universal Clays in order push them up to 1080fps to make minor power factor. I still use Clays in .38/.45 but have better luck using Universal in the higher pressure rounds like 9/.40.
